Please help me...

I found a bird and have been feeding and caring for it for a week now. A game warden told me by looking at photos that my bird is a pigeon. I found him in the roadway in Ky. and his sibling was dead in the road so I caught him up before he got killed. I love him and want to take the best care of him and if he is a pigeon I need to know what to feed him.
Thanks so much, Steph

He is a pigeon. Give me a few moments to find some links for you to read. I'll be right back.

Read the information in this link and then tell me...is this bird able to eat on it's own?
What are you feeding it?

Yes, the bird is eating on its own.

I have been feeding it oats, gravel and grit, and the game warden guy told me to give it dog food soaked in warm water.

Thanks for the quick response. How old would you guess he is?

A pigeon mix purchase from a feed or farm store would be the best but if that isn't available look for a dove mix. Walmart should have it and maybe even a pet store. If you can't find that, you can buy wild bird seed and add dried peas, lentils and brown rice that you can find in bulk in most grocery store. In addition, you need to offer oyster shell which you definitely can find in small amounts at a pet store. My pigeons like minced carrots, leafy green lettuce, minced broccoli tops, defrosted corn and peas all offered as treats.
Equally important, is where you keep this pigeon. If you are keeping him out side, he need to be safe from day time and night time predators. We recommend an enclosure that is made with 1/4 in hard ware cloth. The very best would be to keep him inside. I would also recommend giving him a mirror to look at himself which will be comforting as he is the only one.

He looks to be about three weeks old. I would always have seed and fresh water available. Check his crop often to make use he is eating enough. Right now he is still growing into himself and should have all the food he wants.

Is there a feed and grain store or pet shop near you that you could pick up some pigeon food? If not, I sometimes mix "no mess" (hull less) wild bird seed in with my birds seed for a treat. Safflower seed, crumbled "whole wheat" bread. If he's eating on his own, keep a dish with food available and fresh water and grit. Hope this helps until the "pro"s" come back.

Oh yes. I really am getting attached to him already. My husband built him a cage similar to a rabbit cage and he seems to like it. He follows me around like a dog when I have him in the basement with me. Thanks so much for the information. I will start feeding him accordingly. Again, thanks so much.
