Rehoming a young disabled collared doveHi,
I have been looking after a young collared dove for 5 weeks. I found it in the garden being attacked by magpies. Its left eye was completely closed and it had a damaged right leg. The eye is now fine but it is permanently lame on its leg - it can't seem to extend its toes. As a result it can't use the right foot, so has difficulty walking, although it can perch reasonably well. I think it is unlikely that it will be able to be released - it will be too vulnerable on the ground. It has been very tame from the outset. It cheeps at me and is currently sitting on my head a I type! I am hoping to take it to a sanctuary. However, I am concerned for its welfare as it has become very bonded to me (and me to it!). Do you think it will cope well in the sanctuary? Will the sanctuary keep a close eye on it to ensure it will interact successfully with other birds? Is it accepted practice to place the bird back with the rescuer if it can't cope in the sanctuary? I look forward to your thoughts. Thank you Michele |

Hi Michele,
It depends very much on the sanctuary! Some are really good and caring, others have no right to call themselves sanctuaries! The alternative would be to find someone like you who has a rescued dove , has kept it and wants a companion for it. As it is still a squeaker it should have no difficulty bonding with another squeaker or with another adult. Our Poppet http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/showth...referrerid=560was hand raised by another member, came to us 5 years ago, bonded with John and has been faithful to him for all that time, even though she only sees him once a fortnight (well, she had another collared dove admirer this year which prompted two eggs, but that's another story!) Can you let us know where you are? If you are in the UK I might be able to help. Cynthia

Michele brought Binkie up on Wednesday. She is such a sweet little thing!
I think collared doves are more sensitive and easily disturbed by a change in surroundings than feral pigeons are. Although she settled down in the doviary quickly, and blended in with the other doves immediately, she didn't seem to have eaten very much when I brought her in for the night, so I am hand feeding her defrosted corn and also making certain that she has time to eat the food mix that she is accustomed to (which Michelle very thoughtfully provided) when she comes inside in the evening and also before I put her outside in the mornings. The plan is to acclimatise her to outdoor life gradually, but she will sleep indoors until I am satisfied that she is eating properly. She will stay in the doviary until I am satisfied that she has the ability to fly rings round the ferals in the aviary. ![]() I will take some photos tomorrow. Cynthia

Thanks spirit wings. She is one of those little birds that melts your heart on sight...and so lucky to have been spotted by Michele when she was in really serious trouble!

I think she's lucky. She'll be well taken care of. Keep us updated on her.

I, too, am glad to know that this little one has made its to Cynthia for care. AND, I totally agree that the little doves are so much more "sensitive" to their care and environment than the pigeons are. In many ways, the doves and the quail just drive me to distraction with their FRANTIC reactions to things .. and the doves shed feathers like crazy when they think they are in a threatening situation. I wish there was some way for us to convey to them that they are safe and will be cared for.
Best of luck to you and this little dove, Cynthia. Terry |

Binky has progressed to being outside full time, but I am still hand feeding to ensure that she has enough in her crop to keep her warm at night.
Here she is with Hermione Olive below her: and here she is with hermione Olive in the background (actually that could be Dovelette as her flights look short)
