So I found this Pigeon....now it disappeared!

It was wandering around my small neighborhood, contacted the AU club owner and stuff....read about how to care for it on the internet....gave it some basic birdseed that I got from work and water.....did that for 48 hours after the 24hrs it was probably wandering around. At the time it couldn't fly but also had no visual signs of injury....so this morning I gave him a little sour cream container lid full of new seed which he ate everything except for two types of the seed....and fresh water and took him outside to a point where he could see the sky and get fresh air, but be protected.

I go to sleep as I work nights and get up about 6 hours later and go to check on him on he's gone! I looked all over the general area, and no feathers or anything around....and he didn't jump out of the box the 48 hours I had him....

Do you think he got better and flew home? The club owner said something about pigeons have batteries of sorts...and he prolly got enough energy to fly home. (now I really wish I took a picture of him )

It's very possible that the bird went on home. They can get down and out for a short time, but can recover quicklly if they're not in real bad shape. Was it a young bird? 2008? Did you find the owner or just contact the AU? Knowing how far from home the bird was would give a good idea of where it went.

It was a 2008 bird, and I contacted the club owner from the band and he contacted the owner (but the owner spoke no english). The pigeon was registered to a location that couldn't be more than 1.5hrs driving distance in basic logic. As it was a Twin Cities, MN club....

Do injured or hurt pigeons show injury of sorts? This morning he seemed kind of perky as when I went to try and touch him he spread both wings to move across the box.

I would guess then that if home was 1 1/2 hours driving, it's probably less than 1 hour flying and by this time of the year, most of the young birds have been well past the one hour flying time in training. As far as showing if they are hurt or injured, depends on what type of injury you're talking about. I would make a guess and say that the bird you found probably got lost and was without food and/or water for a couple of days and just got too weak to continue his journey home. After a couple of days of rest it was probably ready to try again. We can only hope that it makes it this time.
I would however, keep an eye out for it for the next few days. I've known many cases where a bird was released to go home and a few days later, it would show back up. How they CAN'T find home, but can remember a strange place where they got food and water is a little confusing to me, but, let's face it. We still don't know exactly what makes these guys tick yet.
What you did was a good thing and coming from a pigeon racer, it's much appreciated.

No problem, so should I still leave out some food and water for it for a couple of days? But I will most definitely keep an eye out for him. I could tell that pigeons are very smart and observant birds. He would always be checking me out when I was coming to visit him.

Lets hope he makes it! Otherwise I hope he comes back here if he can't find home!

Thanks for your time and help. It makes me feel better....

I don't know that I would leave food and water. Just keep an eye out for it. IF it does return, then the chances of it going home on it's own, go down considerably. At that point, I would contact the owner to see if they can pick the bird up or meet you half way or just ask if they even want the bird back. Leaving it out on it's own isn't a good idea. If it returns, the best thing to do would be catch it and keep it safe until what to do with it can be resolved.
Just sort of play it by ear and if it comes back and you need help, just let us know.

Thumbs up

(if he would come back yeah, I will put him back in the same box I had him in and put a screen or something over it)

Good News! (i think) I guess my mom and dad were kind of getting into it to, and I told em about posting here and what the club owner said, and he went and talked to the neighbor about the pigeon and he said 3-4 days or more ago he saw it on the roof of the other neighbors house.....So maybe he really was just tired and didn't get hurt....Maybe the two days in the box without having to hide and stuff was good for him. Cuz when we saw him the first day (3 days ago) he wouldn't even move out from behind my car tire he was so scared or tired (but we didn't think of catching him, until he came back the next day).....I can only hope he got home...and I think I maybe have found a new hobby.

I have another question, but I will post it in the correct forum section.

Hopefully he replenished his reserves with food and rest and then went home.

Perhaps you can call the owner and see if the bird returned.
