Strange and curious 'Squeaker'

Walked outside, and standing on the sidewalk, under where the Swap Cooler drips, was a slender 'Squeaker', standing tall, with the biggest Crop you can imagine, seemingly filled with Water.

Somehow ( he was all dripping wet too, ) he seems to have been standing there and managing to drink the falling drips I guess...there is no puddle there, and the drips evaporate pretty fast, so all there is really, is a wet spot on the concrete.

Anyway, he's some ways before flegdling age, so, I crouched down and tried to visit with him a little while and he was 'nervous' about that, but we got it together and I scooped him up and set him into a nice clean Cage for him to rest a while and for me to see how he is doing.

Will try and get a few pictures later...

Probably 108 or 110 out...no idea where he came from...

Parents dropped him off. You probably have a squeaker daycare sign that your not aware of. I have one somewhere.
Pigeon parents dropped off their squeaker that was full of canker. No note or anything. Parents probably thought it was a no brainer and note was not needed.

I always wonder how pigeons handle drinking water from strange places. It scares me.

Thanks Shi..!

I think you're right about that Kippy..!

Well, a couple hours now, and his Cage Towel is dotted with flat 'Water Color' looking 'yellow' Urates, so...I think 'Mr. Spartrix' is going to visit him quite soon.

Vent shows similar yellow Urates in the feathers there, but only slightly.

He was SO "full" of Water ( and I dunno if there are any Seeds under all that Water or not, ) I did not want to risk pushing on that Crop for checking his Throat and so on, so all I did was gently hold him a little, have-a-little-visit, showed him around so he could see all the various free roving others, and set him into his Cage.

Some images here -

Now, maybe he was able to drink b-a-r-e-l-y, out the crack in the sidewalk where the Water might pool a little, and just kept doing that for who knows how long, filling himself up like a Water Baloon...

So, at least he is well Hydrated, and, I presume, has learned how to drink, too.

I just hope the Crop goes 'down' nicely over the next several hours, or over he rest of the day, and that there is no issue with it being clogged and over-full because of illness or a foreign object in there...so, I hope to see lots more Urates getting made as he processes all that Water...and we can osey on to seeing about 'Seeds' then.

So, wish him luck..!

It shouldn't take an excess of water more than an hour to start showing up as some pretty wet poops. If not, you're going to have to worry about some GI issues.

Hi Pidgey,

Not uncommon for fledglings to get seperated from their parents, and to starve around here...so, might be he was not far from starving, or semi-starving, but figured out how to drink anyway, and spent his day so far, standing under the 'drip', drinking...

I do suspect Canker of course, but, whether it had occasioned his seperation from his parents, or, whether he got it while starving...could be either way I s'pose.

Seems reasonably healthy all tolled, good Feather, average strong...good reflexes. He would not have let me catch him had I not been very patient and soothing, he bolted at one point, and ran very well...

Waiting to see if any poops will be getting made, or if all he had in him was 'Water'...

I can palpate his Crop soon as I feel there is room to do it..!

Thanks Terry..!

I am worried about his Crop.

Though it has gone down a lot, it is still 'saggy' and hanging below the level of his Keel as he stands normally...

Either the Crop is stretched out abnormally to be so 'low', or, ( and I sure hope this is not what is going on, ) his Crop has a perforation, and the Liquid has been under the Skin, below or around his Crop as-it-were, and, for which reason, the Water has been slower to pass.

He has not pooped-out any Water or Watery-poops...

He has made about eight, Shirt-Button size 'dots' of 'flat paint-like' Yellow Urates, three or four of which have a little dab of dark brown poo.

I gave him half a 'Spartrix' around 11:00 P.M.

I don't know whether to feed him, or wait.

He seems fairly strong, so...maybe wait till morning and see if the Crop seems to suggest it yes-or-no has a perforation in it.

I hate to say it, but it seems to suggest this now, so...

Hmmmmm...

Any ideas?

If his Crop has a perforation in it, allowing food and liquids to leak out to then be under the skin below the Crop proper...

What should one do?

I gently felt his Crop bottom area, and did not feel any Seeds or solid items there.

Maybe I will call my Vet now, and see if they can call me in the morning if they have any openings for the afternoon.

If he does seem to have a leaking Crop, and, if this little one needs an exploratory open-up of his front, to see what is going on there, or to fix it with a few sutures, then sooner the better, so he can get on to being able to have some food or formula to keep running on...I'd think...

I would not want to feed him, if the formula is just going to leak out and be festering in there under the skin, ACV or not, you know?

I have heard of Canler 'eating' through a Crop...

Anyway...just trying to 'think'...

If any ideas, please let me know?

Thanks!

Could it be sour crop or crop status as well as canker?

I'm glad you are taking him to the avian vet, please do update us,

Hi Treesa,

He does not have the 'usual' postures or mannerisms I would associate with either of those...

He has made a few small syrupy little medium Brown poops since I hit the hay around 5 this morning. I'd still be sleeping, but the phone kept ringing constantly for half an hour, just a fax maching on the other end, and I do not have a fax.

Oye...

Called the Vets again, they can slip me in around "Ten", so...soon to gather up the little one, and take off...

Well, the Vet does not believe that the Crop is leaking...but, the Crop is obviously stretched out, strained, and sagging.

There is a lot of purple bruising all up his front and at the fronts of his shoulders, Purple Skin covering his Crop, so...one would suppose he had flown into something, or, flown head on into maybe the slanted Windshield of an on-coming Car, bruising his front, Blod clots under the skin close to his Keel even, but fine otherwise.

Maybe he had quite a bit of Water in his crop when that happenned....then, once sort of stunned and bruised up, just kept drinking till he was way over full with an already and strained bruised Crop...

Such is my conjecture anyway, as for what may have happenned to him.

He does not know how to peck, but, he DOES know how to 'drink'...so that may be why he had drank so much yesterday.

All in all, he seems fine but for the sagging tender strained Crop, and I might make him a 'Bra' here in a little while to support it while it heals and regains it's tone.

Right now, I am bone-tired and have been out in the heat or driving a lot anyway, just about all day, the Vet appointment saw me waiting 2 Hours because they had some emergency things to deal with, and other waiting things after that for other matters once I had him back home...so I am headed for a nice Nap...then, to feed the little one, make a 'Bra' for him, and whatever else.

He is a lovely youngster-fledgling, and handled himself supurbly in the exainations and so on. Lots of 'peeps', though most of them have a questioning way about them.

Love..!

Well..looks like he threw up all the formula.

I know the formula was "good", I just made it for him..!

Oye...

Maybe just stay with things he can drink for today and see how that goes, or try a few Seeds again.

He looks good otherwise, and his Crop is less 'saggy' and or appearing to regain a little of it's normal elasticity now...

Any ideas on any of this?

Phil,

I know that this is a serious thread, but ...

I think he was preparing for a water balloon fight. Kamikaze Pigeon Kid Wins Water Balloon Contest. To make a big splash: Crash into the other pigeon and unload crop contents.

Hi Tressa,

Thank you for the mention...

Yes, could be...

He has not shown the 'classic' postures and other suggestions of Crop Stasis when of the 'Candida' kind...but, the huge volume of Water he originally had in his Crop did seem to pass 'slowly'...

and he did throw up the formula I tubefed him last Night.

I suppose the considerable bruising he has on his Crop and front area in general...could effect the Crop in how well things pass on, or that the portions of the Organ which comunicate to his Stomach, may be bruised or tender or 'slow' in their functions for the tie being...

He was very surreal looking when I found him...silohuette like a 'Bowling Pin' standing there...

He looks a lot more normal now...
