west palm beach, broken wing !well, it 's contagious....my daughter, libby just called me, she rescued a pigeon that 's got a mangled wing. says it's broken, and the flights on that side are nearly ripped out. poo is normal, eating , drinking, running around, and she's quickly falling in love with him - of course.
sounds like the break is a compound break, and i can't stand the thought of the wee pijjie not having pain meds and proper medical care. she's called the local wildlife rehab place, thinks they can take him, but if he's not gonna be releasable....? well, if they're like ours up here, they'll just euthanize him. i told her if she's okay with knowing that, then it's up to her-- neither of us want him to suffer, but i'm thinking she might want to keep him. anybody in the west palm beach area that could help a kid out? she's a hairdresser, by the way, so there could be some free cuts in your future... ![]() feel free to shoot me an email, or get me on facebook if you can help. lizzhound@hotmail.com lizz doptis thanks so much you guys!! trooper and the rest of the flock says HI!!

i'm probably gonna get my head bit off for this but.
compound fractures (bone out of the skin) are not only incredibly painful, severe infection is very difficult to prevent in this type of injury involving the bone. if the fracture is less than 24 hrs old they sometimes can do surgery to pin and repair the wing, but depending on where the break is his chance of ever being able to fly are pretty slim. the problem is most rehab centers cannot afford to do this treatment for a animal that likely cannot ever be released, and is it really humane to put him thru 1 or several surgeries to repair. amputation would be possible, but it's doubtful that they would willing to do it. it's tough when they are hurt that bad, people call me all the time and say "oh, it's only a minor injury, it's just that it's wing is broken" a badly broken wing on a bird is usually a death sentence

crap, really??? well, she said the very end section of his wing was practically ripped off, i guess on further inspection, it seems it was hanging on by a thread. no fresh blood, so she snipped the thread of whatever that was keeping it attached. my daughter is not the type to attempt surgery, so i'm SURE that it was BARELY attached.
i really at least want to give the birdling a chance. the horrific injuries that my trooper survived gives me hope for almost any adult pigeon. i can get my hands on metacam and albion or baytril to ship to her, he's obviously not going to be releasable now, so if he can heal up and be a house pigeon, then ...? i would never advise her to go 'too' far in trying to save him, but trooper got a chance two years ago, and i want to pass his legacy on. i'll keep her realistic but hopeful. she called a vet, and they said it would be at least 200 to treat him. i say that's b.s., unless they planned on giving him a tanker truck full of baytril or something.... but if anyone is in her area, we would both appreciate some in-person advice.

oh poor guy, that must hurt so bad, he really should be looked at by an avian vet and at least be stitched up, and yes avian vets are very expensive, but well worth it.
maybe she can check around with other vets in her area.

i KNOW! i can't even imagine it. one of my clients is a vet and i'm gonna have her grab me some meds to mail down to her. i think we can at least give it a good team effort...
there's no way libby can pay for an avian vet. if she were here, i might be able to get a decent rate with my avian vet, on a 'good samaritan' type plan, but....sighhhh.... i'm in ohio, and she's in florida! too far away!!!! i'm just glad that she got him. i guess she was at work, and she and a few other stylists were running around trying to catch him. she finally threw a towel over him. so now he's got food , water and shelter, and a libby that's falling for his pigeony charm. they get us every time.....

well, here's hoping that the vet at the wildlife center will be able to address any issues with him.
poor bird, poor lib...she's upset still that she had to drop him off with them.... is she my child, or what? haven't heard from her yet...keep your fingers crossed.

the break at the end of his wing is much more hopeful that close to the body, those are the ones i usually get, and they are a bloody mess, i always feel so bad for them.
if she checks around she may find a soft hearted vet that is willing to cut her a break

apparently my ex.mother in law is going as the wicked witch of the south this year, because she woudln't let libby keep him, so she had to take him to the wildlife center for treatment. they told libby if they couldn't keep him or release him, that she could come get him, which i think is WAY cool of them.
my client that's a vet is bringing me metacam and albon to send to her [gotta love bartering!] . she thinks they'll be calling her today, so now we just have to get someone to pick the birdling up totally pisses me off that she won't let her keep him. seriously, like how intrusive is a pigeon??? one! one pigeon??!!! i never liked her anyway.
