What do i do ??Hi all,
Im a newcomer to this site, only this morning we found an abandoned pigeon in a roof space, it's young but i could not guess as too how old it would be.. I have no exsisting pets or small children that will be a problem, and will be able to look after the young pigeon but am not sure how to go about it. How long can i keep it in a temporary basket?? and then what is the pigeon suppose to live in after that??? This all very new to me and i would appreciate any assistance i could get. Kind Regards Rose ![]() |

Hello and welcome to Pigeons.com
Thank you for helping this abandoned youngster. Please check this site and compare the youngsters at various ages, to the one you have and let us know how old it is and we will help you to feed it. http://www.speedpigeon.com/baby_racing_pigeon.htm A small basket for now will do, make sure the baby is free from any air drafts and keep it warm on a heating pad set on low. You can put a towel between the baby and heating pad. The baby may not be weaned yet, and may need to be hand fed. |

Hi Rose,
Thank you for wishing to aid this little Pigeon! If I may ask, how do you know it was 'abandonded'? The front of a Pigeon is the location of their Crop...when parent Pigeons feed their Babys and Youngsters, usually, they do so untill the recipient's Crop is fairly full... When 'full' the Crop of a youngster will stand out proudly and round. Can you determine if yours had an empty Crop or a fullish one? And or if the little Bird has pooped since your getting them? If you refer to the link in the above post, you can get some idea if this Bird is less than a month old... Of course young Birds do at times become seperated from their Parents, or become lost or wayward...and it is a good thing for them if we may find them and take over from there. Often, a youngish Bird is sitting in some high place, merely abideing his time and still being cared for off and on by his parents, who do not remain near but instead, come and go in feeding the youngster, untill the youngster can fly well enough to join them in foraging expeditions and grazing activities...so... I am just seeing if we can fuigure out if this little one is indeed orphaned, in effect, or was merely sitting somewhere between parent visit meals... Let us know? Best wishes, Phil Las Vegas Last edited by pdpbison; 25th October 2005 at 08:11 PM. |

Hello,
Phil is right, most of the "abandoned" youngsters that are reported on this site have parents close by. Pigeons stop sitting on their young ones during the day when they are about 2 weeks old, I think that this is to avoid attracting predators. The little ones will usually sit very still during this time, but they will look alert, with bright eyes and will have full crops. YOu can usually hear when the parent birds arrive to feed because the little one will startt to peep very loudly. Cynthia

Thanks for explaining Rose, and thank you for acting promptly to save the litle one. Although pigeons are dedicated parents if the nest is moved they will not often identify the chick as theirs and will ignore it even if they see it.
Sometimes it is necessary to remove them even when the parents are there. My recently acquired Serenity was on the ground and being fed by her parents but she could not get back to the roost at night, The couple that rescued her felt terrible taking her away but she would have died otherwise, killed by foxes or feral cats.
