what next ?

Hi everyone

Just found another pigeon again (city pigeon not wood or racer )

It has feathers no down and colured eye (orange) it weighs in at 275 grams ??? Dont know what that means . Pretty sure it is an adult.

Have followed the basic steps from stickies (ie)

hot water bottle with towl
Safe environment quiet ,dark ( cardboard box semi open lid for air and light )
Hydrated with room temp water pich of sugar which it drank when I dipped beak into water so it can swallow o.k .

However when offered food ( seed ) it wont eat , I can make it eat by force feeding but thought I better check with you guys first .

I dont mean being rough just getting some food down its neck so to speak .

Also is a cardboard box o.k for a few days as I will be hopefully passing this bird on . If not can any one recommed were online or shop to get a basic cheap suitable bird cage for any future patients instead of the trusted cardboard box ???

When I found it it couldn't walk /move much and wings seemed weak / broken ??? Or maybe it is just exhausted ?? I will take to the vet for assessment before passing on to a lady I know .

Please get back to me guys and I really appreciate your help and time regarding my questions .

Cheers

Rob

I hope you will get it to the vet today because the bird needs intervention asap.
Have you seen the bird drink?
For a temporary holding cage for birds, you probably could pick up an old aquarium from a thrift shop and then buy a wire top [made for rodents or reptiles] to keep the bird secure. I like them because they are easy to clean. When not used they make great storage for all that bird stuff that is only used in an emergency.
Good luck with the poor thing and let us know what the vet says.

Hi Bob,

If you don't have dogs or cats and are keeping it indoors then a large cardboard box with plastic "wiring" clipped to the open bit should make a good, if not posh, cage.

Maggie (Lady Tarheel) makes her own cages out of wire netting "sewn" together with the stuff that is used in strimmers (bad explanation, I know). There is a thread somewhere with photos.

Hi Bob,

For now just concentrate on getting it to drink, wait until tomorrow to feed it.

If it isn't self feeding by tomorrow try dipping day old wholemeal bread in warm water, opening his beak and putting the food in his mouth then pushing it in.

275 gms isn't particularly good, but it isn't all that bad either. I will usually wait for a rescue to be at least over 300 gms before releasing.

What are its poops like?

Are you in touch with Helen?

You are welcome to visit Wedgewood at any time!

waht next?

Hi Cynthia

Thanks for feedback . No I am not in touch with helen as of yet , I will do what you say so far and have used an aquarium so he can see and also be free from drafts etc . He seems to be quite content on his hot water bottle with a towl around it and will drink no problem on his own .I will try feeding him today and am due to pass him on to an experienced lady near to be who rehabs all kinds of birds from pigeons and seagulls to various kinds of birds of prey , amazing lady especially seeming that she is 85 years old , plus she works part time in a RSPCA charity shop !!

Some people are really an inspiration .

Anyway thanks for all your help so far it is much appreciated.

Just to let everyone know the pigeon I found has ben passed on to Gwen to rehab . He was so much better as when I found him he couldn't stand up at all however when he was passed over he was standing on one leg at times and able to walk around but still not able to fly .

I know he will be in safe hands with Gwen , just thought I would keep you all up to date with how things worked out .

Thanks for all your help .
