when can i let pigeons go?

I found 2 wood pigeons two weeks ago they were about 8 days old at the time they are doing really well ,they have started eating seed from the bottom of the cage now plus i still feed them soaked chick crumb.
My father inlaw has pigeons and he said when they are big enough they can live there,i was just wondering when do you think they will be ready and do you think its a good idea to take them to my father inlaws as i dont feel thet they would live long out in the wild .

They could last in the wild. They will just need a bit of help. It seems they are a bit young yet but sooner or later they can be slowly "released" to come back and feed. Some will stay away when they have found a flock and some will stay. Search some of the threads here there are some concerning soft releases.

Hi sheild,

Thank you for raising the wood pigeons and doing such a great job.

Why don't you e-mail our moderator, Cynthia, and ask her the same questions. She has had a lot of experience raising wood pigeons and probably can give you great advice.

I think that Alison is the best person to ask about releasing Woodies. I am experienced in their care but am not a good releaser! I pass them on for that.

I have e-mailed the contact details.

I would think that they would not make it in the wild, they were found at a very young age, hand fed by humans and now most likely will view them as thier food source for life. Do they have any fear of you or are they "domesticated" now. My "vast" experience is one bird and it won't let me near it. But that's what it needs to survive in the wild. Fear of humans and the ability to feed itself. Otherwise it's not going to make it.
