When to release?About a month ago, I found a pigeon hanging out under a car. It was strange because it was at night. He couldn't fly, he was puffed up and was unable to perch, as he would fall forward. I believe he is feral and does not have a band. No veterinarian will touch him, so I have been trying to help him on my own. For the first few days he wouldn't eat. I was able to give him water and pedialyte by syringe and it seemed to help him regain some of his strength. I found your website and the duckpolice which which I am so grateful for, as it was there I found the info I needed in regards to food. At first I thought he had an injured wing because he could not fly, but about a week ago I found a large cluster of feathers with a huge scab attatched. I found the location of the injury on the side of his neck above one of his wings. Seems to have healed fine on it's own. He started to eat on his own after about 10 days. But he still doesn't eat alot. I stopped force feeding him to see if he would eat more and so he wouldn't become dependant on me for food, but he just eats small bits. Wild bird seed and hulled raw sunflower seeds. He has become stronger and doesn't seem bonded with me which I suppose is good for release. But I can't tell how well he flies. I let him out of his cage and he flutters his wings a lot and can fly very small distances (from the floor to the bed) but, doesn't really fly around. In addition, with the cold weather, I am worried that he may be too thin for release, as I can feel his breastbone. Any advice?

It sounds like this bird isn't anywhere ready for release. So, you may have a room-mate until he is stronger and the weather warms up.
You also do need to make sure he can fly before you let him go. When you are able to let him go we can talk you through the best way to do that.It sounds like this bird may be the survivor of a Hawk attack. Do you think he is a young bird? Thank you for rescuing him. He probably would have been long dead without your kindness.

I don't think he is young, but how would I tell? Should I worry that I can feel his breastbone and that he doesn't eat much even if I leave large quantities of food? I am in Portland, Oregon too!

Thank you for taking this pigeon in, he probably wouldn't have made it if you didn't. Welcome to Pigeon Talk, too. We can further evaluate the pigeon's condition and release chances after Charis gets a chance to see him.
Sounds like he isn't ready for release yet. Sometimes it takes them a little while to really get some fat/weight on them, and even if they eat a lot, can take a bit to make the breast bone or keel not so prominent. He could probably do with a worming pill, too, which are often sold at pet stores and feed stores. Keep us updated, and thanks Charis for offering to help. ![]()
