Canker in the UKWe live with it every day but it is rare that it gets in the news.
Best stock up with Spartrix as well as keeping the feeding stations and treating the garden water with a natural antifungal. http://new.edp24.co.uk/content/news/...A56%3A34%3A717 Cynthia

Thanks for sharing Cynthia.
I guess ACV in the bird drinker and bath would be good then to help prevent an epidemic. |

There is something with anti-protozoal properties that you can treat the drinking water with. It comes from Gem supplements and is calle Trikanox:
Trikanox represents a significant step forward in pigeon healthcare and provides fanciers with a totally natural product containing three powerful active ingredients which work together to boost the pigeons defences against diseases. Two of these properties have been shown by independent research to exhibit anti-protozoal and anti fungal properties. Active Component 1 - Mixed Alkaloids The first component of TRIKANOX is a mixture of plant Alkaloids with the dominant one being Berberine, which has been scientifically proven to have extensive activity in preventing the growth of many micro-organisms including protozoa such as Trichomonas. Active Component 2 - Allicin The second active component of TRIKANOX is allicin. This non antibiotic sulphur containing plant ingredient is now recognised as having a dramatic inhibitory effect on a wide range of micro-organisms including protozoa. Active Component 3 - Echinacosides The plant family Echinacea has long been associated with beneficial effects on the immune system. Scientific evidence is now showing that certain components within the plant are largely responsible for these effects. The end result is that the Echinacosides can boost the pigeons normal defence mechanisms. Cynthia

Thank you Cynthia,
That is almost everything I have been giving my birds, but seperately. Echinacea is only beneficial for 3 days, after that it looses its punch. |

I occasionally check in on another bird forum (Birdforum.net) that Brad mentioned to us about a year ago. I love the pictures they post but the forum is mainly for birdwatchers and the few posts I have read never talk about saving a bird.
Just now, I caught a post about the trich problem in Great Britain and read some of the posts but saw nothing about any effort to medicate these birds. You may be interested in reading this. http://birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=67682

Thanks for the link Maggie. I don't know why but their attitude and comments made my hackles rise. Maybe it is too late in the evening. I will have to do some deep breathing and then post tomorrow!

Cynthia, I decided also to just "step back" for awhile before I post. I have made only a few posts because the forum is so huge and my interests lie in trying to heal rather than just watch.
Oddly enough, though, I have made a friend on there, quite out of the blue. There is a member, a doctor in Maylasia who writes just delightful posts and awhile back I saw it was his birthday and posted wishes to him and told him how much I enjoyed his posts. He PM'd me and when I responded I told him about the rehab work we do with pigeons. He has since sent me a picture that he took of one of their native pigeons (pink-necked pigeon). He knows I don't go on site very often so he now alerts me by PM when he makes a post on their forum "My Birding Day". He seems to be a kind, caring person so I think I will run it by him about how to post on this topic. I hope you can post. You're so knowledgeable and good with words. I may just make a hash out of whatever I put in the post but I'll try. Plus, I need to take the time to read all six pages of posts.
