Feed the birds!!!!

A wildlife charity has backed a Northumberland couple who have been told by their local council to stop feeding the birds in their garden.

Mick and June Dunny, from Belford, were warned by Berwick Council that birds cause problems with noise and dirt and food should not be left out for them.

Mr Dunny said it was "ridiculous" and vowed to continue.

The RSPB said responsible feeding should be encouraged as it was vital to give birds a helping hand.

The letter from the council said: "Birds cause some considerable problem in forms of noise and dirt.

'Important time'

"Not only do their droppings damage and contaminate property, the birds also carry various diseases such as salmonella.

"Food put out for them will also attract rats and vermin.

It added: "If we establish that a nuisance or pest problem does exist, we may have to reconsider further action."

However, Mr Dunny said: "It's absolutely ridiculous. About 90% of people in Belford feed their birds. I'm not going to stop."

An RSPB spokeswoman said: "We would encourage people to feed their garden birds throughout the year.

"This is an important time when a lot of adolescent birds are putting down fat to see them through the winter, and they need to feed up."

She added: "Providing birds with supplementary food brings them closer so that we can marvel at their exciting behaviour and wonderful colours."

That is TOTALLY ridiculous, and shows no respect for Gods creation. I'm glad they have the backing of a wildlife charity, but in this day and age, they may need alot more backing.

Oh geez, some of the things they come up with.

Talk about noise there's a person across the canal that's been learning how to play the drums for the past 5 years. maybe we can stop feeding him.

Dirt? That's a new one to me. Talk about Gods creations, we get dust storms. Now that's dirt!
