Is there anything we can do about this?http://tinyurl.com/2c2jsz
Dirty pigeons in firing line... Published on 12/10/2007 PROBLEM pigeons responsible for dropping dirt all over Prudhoe’s revamped town centre have been sentenced to death. Councillors in the town are fed up of the birds congregating at a number of overhead locations on Front Street, and fouling the pavements below. An £800,000 scheme to renew pavements and spruce up the cobbles area on Front Street is well advanced. Prudhoe Town Council is keen to ensure the scheme is not blighted by the unwanted mess, so it has called in specialists to exterminate the birds. At last week’s council meeting Coun. Tony Reid said: “We have spent more than half a million pounds on the street and when I walk down there I see bird droppings. I think it is undermining the work.” Coun. Reid said health factors also needed to be taken into consideration, with pedestrians trailing the dirt into food shops on the street. He added: “It is unsightly and unacceptable and something needs to be done.” After being urged to come up with a solution by Coun. Tony Williamson, Coun. Reid proposed to call in a pest control company to exterminate the pigeons. Coun. Jennifer McGee agreed that the birds posed a health hazard. She said: “Nobody likes to do anything to the birds, but if the proposal is to bring in a pest exterminator then I would support that.” Coun. Andy Gill said the problem should have been solved years ago when only a small number of pigeons were congregating near the library. He said a lack of action over the years has exacerbated the problem. Of the 14 members present, 13 voted in favour of exterminating the pigeons. Only one member, Coun. Duncan Couchman, voted against Coun. Reid’s proposal. |

Write to the Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/ministers/benn.htm and express concern about the apparent failure by the council and/or exterminators to consider humane alternatives first as required by current legislation ( Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 -the second petition on this site is a good reference point for this).
Hopefully the minister will write to the council, once he does that they are obliged to respond and explain themselves. Cynthia

Cynthia,
It's fine to do this but there is no petition online that would enable none UK residents to particiapate. As individuals acting alone, it bears no weight but a large petition does have impact. That's why I had asked about including non UK members in the previous petition requests. I don't know how many of the approximately 7,000 members here are actually active but even if half signed a petition, that's a lot of signatures plus it would mean that people from all over the world are watching everything that is going on with these birds. Believe me, if they see that, then they will realize they are not operating in a vacuum. Just as an aside, if people from all over the world sent the beloved Mayor Livingston a message that they are throroughly disgusted with his obsession, even he might think twice. I have only just seen this; I don't log on as often as I should. However, I'll try to get onto it in the morning. Thanks for everything everyone's already done, and well spotted, Pigeonperson, hopefully Prudhoe are already getting some letters
If anyone does hear of culls like this in the UK, PLEASE let us know by emailing info@savethepigeons.org. This email account gets checked daily and we can then get to work right away. All the best, Niel |

Thanks for the link Neil. I have just prepared my letter and Hallswood Sanctuary have also said that they will do what they can to prevent it.
And thank you Pigeon Person, for finding the article. It is vitally important that we are able to act against such attrocitoes (because that is what culls are) as soon as possible. Cynthia

Well done Jayne,
Save the Trafalgar Square Pigeons (STTSP) has now emailed and written to the Council pointing out the futility of culling and the precariousness of their legal positon if they go ahead. Let's see what they say! Cheers, Niel |

I sent one off first thing this morning and took the tack of questioning on several points the validity of the Council's grounds for a General Licence to exterminate the birds. Noted also that DEFRA publications and other official sources do not support the view of pigeons as a risk to the population in general.

I did a search for "pigeons Prudhoe" (without the inverted commas) and this thread was third down!
This is one of the responses the paper received: http://www.hexham-courant.co.uk/lett...=656&id=554744 And would you believe that this is Tynedale Council's information on pigeons and their control?? http://www.tynedale.gov.uk/residents...o.asp?type=316 Cynthia
