Koll Company throwing birds out of nests

if you click on link - it will lead you to a Petition

On February 26, PETA caseworkers received reports that The Koll Company
is planning to begin a pigeon-removal program in March at the Missouri
Commons, located at 1430 E. Missouri Ave. in Phoenix, Arizona. Our
callers claim that previous efforts to remove pigeons from the Missouri
Commons involved pressure-washing birds' nests off the building, causing
young pigeons who haven't yet learned how to fly to be hurled to their
deaths to the pavement below.

Our callers report having arrived at the building during the previous
removal session to find "baby pigeon carcasses strewn across the
pavement," and they fear that the upcoming removal program will be similarly
cruel in nature. PETA has attempted to reach Jennifer Prior, Koll's
property manager in charge of the Missouri Commons, in hopes of discussing
the matter with her, but our attempts to contact her have gone
unanswered.

Please contact Prior and ask her to determine this year's intended
method of pigeon control immediately and to ensure that any illegal and/or
inhumane practices that are being performed by hired pest-control
agencies are ended immediately. Remind her that plenty of humane
pigeon-control strategies exist, so there's no need to support the slaughter of
baby pigeons.

Please send polite comments to:

I also signed the petition. I hope it will not be put aside like most petitions until after the fact.

Myriam, thank you for this information. We battled with a local shopping center over their methods and the one thing that seemed to get their attention the most was a threat to get the media in on what they were doing.

The angriest I ever got was getting a call from a shop owner who found two baby finch on the cement in front of her jewelry store. They were so covered in goop glue that I didn't think we could pull them through, but we did! They never think farther than their nose that goop hurts small songbirds more than pigeons. Songbirds are not strong enough to pull out of goop while pigeons usually can. Another time, my husband, Lewis, was there to feed the pigeons and saw them starting to power wash one of the canopies. He knew there were baby pigeons there and asked if they would help him get them down before they started. They did help, even to setting up the power lift for him to get the babies which he brought home.

After those episodes, I called them continually, every time we saw them doing anything that might harm the pigeons. They kept our name on file and would call us. Their initial solution to the problem was to install spikes but the pigeons just worked around those. Finally, they completely remodeled the entire shopping center to remove all canopies. The pigeons did relocate - many of them to an adjacent parking deck.
