...of course they mention "de-icing" chemicals ( Salt?) in merest passing, while hamming up the Pigeon aspect.
Do they co-relate the specific points of structural failure with accmulated Pigeon droppings having effected those key points? Any boy scout could figure THAT out by looking at it casually. If there is no co-relation to be asserted, then why even bother bringing Pigeons into it at all? Other than smoke and noise. One could see in the videos where the thing let go...there is nothing that subtle about failures of these kinds, and the points that did fail were not made right or to the right scale to begin with, or, they would not have let go. This "40 year old Bridge" was simply a bad design to begin with, poorly maintained, and irreponsibly monitored - inspected...and or whatever quality of inspecdtions or monitorings, something else prevailed. Pigeons had no more to do with it's collapse then people spitting out their car windows did. Idiots and beurocratic double talk, like usual... ...sigh... Phil l v |

GOLLY, just think what pigeons could do with an organized union against human structures! The POWER in their POOP to dissolve CONCRETE AND STEEL!! Not to mention the use for gunpowder!!
PIGEONS ARISE! STRIKE BACK AGAINST THOSE WHO SPEAK AGAINST YOU!! THE SPPs WILL RISE AGAIN!!! Mmmmm, wonder what man will blame the pigeons for NEXT! Oh yeah, BIRD FLU...*SIGH* Shi & Squeaks, who came off his nest to give HIS opinion by saying, "what a load of pigeon POOP!" And proceeded to - ah - back up his statement!! ![]() |

Quite "so" shi! Quite "so" Mr. Squeaks!
Ohhhhhh...I wish EVERY Pigeon able to fly could organize and form tight formations for really accurate poop-unloading 'Missions'... Thing is, there would be so many truely important targets, they'e be buisy for decades with no time for anything else..! Phil WHo is about to feed some Squeakers now himself... In..Las Vegas |

"When water gets in and combines with the salt and ammonia, it creates small electrochemical reactions that rust the steel underneath."
Yeah, like that water stuff isn't capable of rusting steel all by itself.. Puh-lease. |

I think the REAL FAILURE here in this article, is focusing the blame of the failure of the bridge on pigeons, the true responsiblity of blame of course, lies in those who built and designed it.
The article is a load of c _ _ _. It just incites more discrimination against our pigeons.

Whats NextA week or so ago it was pigeons in VENICE, ITALY cracking marble with their (JACK HAMMER)beaks now its pigeons with ATOMIC POOP destroying a bridge.Whats next ???????????? Pigeon poop causing global warming when will all this end its all excuses for those that made mistakes to push the blame on to an animal that can't defend it self to all these lies. .GEORGE

The sad thing is that many people will buy into this theory and even elaborate on it, turn it into a whale of a tale. "Our kind " can be short on independent thinking.

The basic chemistry proffered in this article is true enough. That said, unless this bridge had never been maintained or cleaned, and they had flocks of several hundred thousand pigeons pooping up mounds and mounds of guano in every possible spot, no way pigeons were even contributory to the failure of the bridge.
It's human error, exceeding designed capacities and stresses, and design flaws all the way. Yes, pigeons make a mess, and their poops can contribute to corrosion but it's the massive amounts of road swill (leaks and deposits of fluids from the traffic on the roads), mag chloride, salt, gravel, grit, rain and snow waters, and general ick that are on the roadways that are responsible for the chemical degradation of bridges throughout the country. Water is the universal solvent (at least in this universe). Bridges that cross water are subjected to additional moisture (H2O) on a 24/7 basis, even in the wintertime. Plus if there is traffic on the waterways below, where do they think the fume plume from the watercraft engines will be deposited?? Under the bridges of course.

I saw this this morning in the aol news and I felt like screaming. That is such cr*%.
There are structures, buildings and bridges hundreds/thousand of years old on which probably millions of birds, including pigeons roosted and pooped on and they are still standing. Reti |

You know something? I betcha even if there were no pigeons under that bridge that bridge would've still collapsed. Because it's probably OLD. They don't take care of things like they used to here. There are so many cutbacks for things. The fault, I believe, is with the people who inspect these bridges. Why didn't they catch the errosion long before this happened so that it could've been fixed a long time ago? This has probably been going on for years and now they catch it?
Pigeons or not, it probably still would've collapsed. The salts they use on these roads will go through steel. Look at all the rust buckets driven on the roads today. That's what's happening. That salt is strong. (And I think it's not even made in this country. I think we import it. It's cheaper that way. And Lord knows what they make it out of.) |

what a load of pigeon poo! What about acid rains that comes from smog from cars and factories!? those wash and mix together and form nitrogen acid and stuff and they are highly acidic. probably even more so than pigeon poop. Not to mention earth quakes that shake it and if there is alitle rust it would make it worse!
