Pigeon shot in Norwich Cathedral

This is a sad and shocking report, but at least there has been a big fuss over a single pigeon and the Cathedral is reviewing its policies.
It shows that protest works.

I have written to the reporter to ask why the paper always describes pigeons as disease carrying birds and suggested that a more acurate description they could use is "these clean, gentle and intelligent birds."

Sad indeed, Cynthia.

I don't understand how some individuals can have absolutely no regard for an innocent living being. Their self respect must have gone by the way side somewhere along the line.

As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't make any difference where these incidents happen. Just the fact that they happen, is unacceptable.

It will be interesting to see what, if any, explanation the reporter gives regarding the description that is so often used in reference to our wondrous pigeons.

Please do keep us posted.

Gadzooks -- no sanctuary for the birds of peace?

Sounds like those poor pigeons stand no chance against us humans.
Maybe with the adverse publicity about the site of the bird's killing will make a difference, but I doubt it. It's those old issues -- NMP (not my problem) NIMBY (not in my back yard). We still haven't learned from our past mistakes about the loss of species. Pigeons may not be threatened NOW, but look to the passenger pigeon, considered the most abundant bird in the North American continent in the early 1800's with numbers in the billions, and extinct in less that 100 years later.

I couldn't resist posting a few quotes from the story

As reported in the Evening News concerns have been raised over the past two years about the booming number of pigeons in the city.

I'd like to know what the "booming population" of humans in Norwich is???

In December 2005 bird experts hatched a plan to rid a Norwich estate of a plague of pigeons by stealing their eggs and swapping them for dummy ones.

The plan involved council officers switching pigeons' eggs for plastic replicas in a bid to halt their spiralling numbers in Mile Cross

I would have loved to see the city council sneaking around replacing pidgie eggs -- at least the politicians would get off their duffs.

Families have also been warned they will face action from Norwich City Council if they feed the disease spreading birds.

Other methods put forward to control Norwich's 2,500 strong pigeon population involve informing the public only to feed the birds in specific areas providing more dovecotes and pigeon proofing buildings with special coatings
.

Sounds like we need to put them in contact with the birth contol folks. I know folks here are skeptical but it's bound to be better than the poisons, shootings, sticky feather-fouling substances (don't believe it when they say that coating is just feels bad to the pigeons, it's almost like saying Avitrol just makes the birds act funny weird), and flawed netting practices.

Ü Do you have problems with pigeons? Telephone Evening News reporter Sarah Hall on 01603 772426 or email sarah.hall2@archant.co.uk

I couldn't resist posting the reporter's contact info: It's a shame she didn't ask for people who have problems with people who have problems with pigeons

Like many other people writing today, she didn't do research into her subject matter re pigeons. Maybe someone should edit the Wikipedia entry again

I missed that bit about "Do you have a problem with pigeons?". Why couldn't they ask "Do you have an issue with innocent animals being killed for no reason?"

Actually Norwich doesn't have such a "booming" pigeon population. There are a few flocks in the city centre, the largest has about 200 birds and the second largest about 80.

Is nothing sacred, even in a cathedral?

I think if they wanted it handled differently they never should have hired a "pest control" company, the name says it all. If pigeons continue to be treated as "pests" I think we need more "people control" companies.

I am absolutely disgusted with this terrible news.

I wonder what St. Francis of Assisi would have said about this.

To think I was looking forward to visiting this 'place of peace' (It is one of the UK's most beautiful Cathedrals) Yet they deprive the life of an innocent pigeon.

I am going to write to the Dean of the Cathedral and voice my deep concerns on this horrific act of cruelty.
