Venice puts its pigeons on the Pill

The pigeons are to be driven from the heart of St Mark's Square in Venice. They may be popular with the tourists who feed them, but the authorities say the birds carry disease and damage the centuries-old buildings with their droppings.

The city wants to follow the example of London mayor Ken Livingstone and his campaign against pigeons in Trafalgar Square.

Officials are considering giving the birds contraceptive grain, fixing spikes on buildings to prevent them landing, and using hawks to scare them away.

However, one bird seed seller in the square protested: "The pigeons are as much a part of Venice as the gondolas."

Why don't they just take care of the pigeons and find them a place where they can nest. Removing eggs and replacing them has been the best population control, as the so-called birth control doesn't work at all.

They should do something, like research and find the facts about population control and what other cities have done, it would save them alot of money and us the time that we end up writing and voicing our opinions and concerns.

Thank you for this latest "news."

Why doesn't everyone just leave these birds alone? For thousands of years they have lived side by side with people. Just lately, now they erode buildings? What about acid rain? Nobody is putting up a big stink about that.
The populations are being brain washed into believing these birds cause diseases. It's come to a point where when somebody says that to me, I ask them to search back into their memories and come up with one person they know who came down with a disease from a pigeon. Sure it happens once in a blue moon and usually with people who work with them on a daily basis but is that justification for doing away with these birds? Why don't people demand that all racoons be eradicated because they can carry rabies?
These birds are more close and more friendly to us than any other feral or wild bird you can think of. It doesn't pay to be close and friendly with humans.

i can remember about a decade ago feral pigeons were everywhere in heart of colombo in sri lanka, now they are reduced to just few pairs. i dont think the goverment tried to get of them but the people started trapping them for the plate.

its sad but these things we cannot control.
