new to the idea of pigeon raising.

I have always loved birds, and am known as the "Bird Man" when it comes to building bird houses and feeders for wild birds.
I have recently red an article about my future brother in laws father and how he raises pigeons, and enjoys it. I found the article very interesting, and am considering creating a place so i can raise a few of my own with my children. So i thought i'd do a little research and learn more about it before i jump into something too soon. I hope i can learn alot from people in here and get many ideas.
I will be starting from scratch so i'm asking for advise and ideas on how to build a nice simple place for them. It gets cold in the winters here in Iowa, so i know i need something to keep them sheltered too. I don't know all the different breeds, so would "roller pigeons" be a good starter pigeon to have with my kids also??
Thanks! Jay

For starters, just type in Lofts (or aviary) on the search feature above, and you will see plans, and pictures of members lofts.

Hi JayBird,
Welcome to PigeonTalk
There are many knowledgable people on this forum, make sure you bookmark us and keep coming back! You won't regret it.
I think it's a great idea to setup a small loft and raise some pigeons with your children! And it's great to hear that you want to learn a bit about it before jumping in.
Pigeons can be seperated into two 'types' of pigeons..Show and Racing Pigeons, which type of pigeon you get can depend on how you wish to keep them (ie do you want to race pigeons or keep in them as pets?)
Take a look around and you will see some fine examples here of the different types of pigeons you could get, also do a search on pigeoncare and you will find much info on how to look after them.
Most importantly, keep asking us questions and we'll get as much info as you need to you.
Keep us updated on your progress!
Regards
Alaska

Hi Jay bird I have a pet pigeon (1) she is an indoor pijjie and sweet as heck. Pigeons are alot of fun to just watch and have as pets. I would if you start to start with maybe 2-4 pigeons and see how you like it, this site is totally awsome!!! The different info you find here and the people are such kind people always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. Mine is just a regular street pigeon I found and rehabbed in Colorado when I lived there 11 years ago. She is my favorite bird out of 5 other parrot type birds. Quiet, clean, doesn't bite, loves to coo and her favorite is cuddling with me in my neck. Good Luck in your new adventure of pigeons you won't be sorry

I would think that rollers (tumblers) would be great especially if you have kids as they really enjoy watching the show !!!!
