Pigeons and parakeets?

I was wondering, when my pigie gets older, would he likely get along with a parakeet?

Maybe...maybe not, but I certainly wouldn't house them together or leave them together unattended.

Hi Prizm,

I agree with Treesa. I have 2 young parakeets and a cockatiel who all share a small living space with my pigeon Jax in my one roomed flat. Jax lives 'free' uncaged but the smaller birds are always caged when I'm not around to supervise them. They are all often out together at the same time for play time and exercise but I am always there to supervise them. I have noticed that the smaller birds are more inclined to show more interest in approaching the pigeon but Jax will usually display defensive behaviour by cooing in her tone of disaproval or try to peck the 'intruder'. My parakeets are still not hand-tame or any where near tame with me but appear to be more interested in the other birds. They are much more inquisitive and fearless than the cockatiel and Jax so are more at risk of agressive injury when invading personal space they are not welcome in.

Here is a recent photo of Jax and Jerry sharing a moment on the window ledge.

That's a beautiful photo! Too bad Jax doesn't care for company--Does he ever seem like he wants avian companionship, or is he content to be alone? I'm just wondering if I'll need to introduce another bird into my home if I keep my little orphaned pigeon.

Hi Lindi,

Gorgeous birds and gorgeous Scottish landscape...even though it's your backyard....nice and lush, green and very "nordic"

Thanks Prizm, Maggie, Brad, I couldn't resist getting a snap of them together.

Prizm, I don't think Jax feels lonely without another pigeon although I would like another in the future when space permits! Jax is a hen and she definately sees me as her 'mate'. Her affections say it all..she is in love! She laid another set of eggs just a couple of weeks ago and had nothing to do with me. I then had to work away from home last weekend and as soon as I got in the door she was all over me cooing, strutting and just wanting every bit of attention I could give her. She has now left her nest very early and is all broody again ...so no I don't think she is lonely . There are quite a few posts from members here who share similar relationships with their pigeons. They are so lovable and loyal to their owners.

Jax sounds really cute & sweet I work a lot though so he'll be home alone a lot if he stays with me ...But you think he'll be okay even if he turns out to be a male?
