Chux - for RehabCHUX PADS FOR REHAB
I have recently used the Chux pads for rehab of pigeons. Due to the expense, I don't use them on all occasions, but do find them very valuable as part of supportive care. You have probably seen these pads, with blue on the back and edges, all hospitals use them.. I highly recommend them for birds in intensive care, when you have a pigeon experiencing very wet droppings and /or using a heating pad, & when stabilizing a bird, thread #8822. They seem to come in all sizes, and the size I use fits nicely in my parrot cage. ADVANTAGES: 1. I can't believe the amount of wetness these pads hold when you have a bird with coccidiosis or other diseases that cause very wet droppings. I had a bird absolutely soak thru newspapers & layers upon layers of paper towels, where these pads held it all up. The pad was so soaked that it weighed a ton, but nothing dripped out. I had to change the pad twice in a day, whereas I would be changing newspapers & paper towels all day. 2. I like them also because when using a heating pad, you can put the bird directly on the Chux pad, and put the towel underneath next to the heating pad. It takes care of any wetness or dampness getting on to the towel or even near the heating pad, which could be a disaster. 3. The top of the pad is very soft and absorbent and the birds nails don't seem to snag on them either, just make sure you lay it down smoothly as you would a towel. The top doesn't seem wet to the touch either (unless it is absolutely soaked)once poops get a little more solid, as the moisture gets trapped in the underlayer. This is a definite plus as the bird isn't standing in any damp wet puddles. 4. Unlike real cloth or towels, you don't have to wash them, just throw them away. I found this website that has the pads: http://www.northshorecare.com/underpads1.html and here is one that tapes down for pets specifically: http://www.northshorecare.com/under-pet.html NOTE: These are just my opinions based on using the product, and you can choose or not choose to use the product. I am in no way soliciting to sell this product, and am not affiliated with the company who manufactures or sells it. Last edited by Trees Gray; 16th November 2005 at 01:47 PM. |

Hi Treesa,
I recently used one that had come w/a cage that I purchased. Can't agree more with you that they are quite a pleasant surprise. I have used them in the past for humans w/incontinency issues but never thought of using them for a pet. I used to purchase these through a medical supplier in my area, and by the case, they are really not that bad price wise, and sometimes the suppliers deliver as they have regular routes that they make drops at. I got the tip for that particular company from a residential care facility as being the best price. Something to look into. fp |

Hi Denise...., Hi Reti
Thanks for your response. fp, I figure they are affordable if you use them onlyfor the wet dropping and when stabilizing a bird. Then again, how many pigeons that are sick, stressed, or hurt, don't have the runs? ![]() |

Hi Everyone,
I have no idea what the prices of either product are, but these pads that are used in hospitals sound very much like the "wee-wee" pads that can be used for training puppies. Could be that the pads made for animals could be cheaper.....or not! Something that may be worth checking out for those that could find the product useful. Linda |

This is one of those products that if you have never used them you just don't know.
Once you have used them, you can't live without them. I haven't used them for a while, and just got some more, and I can't tell you how much time they save in clean up. I just lined my baby-doll coop with them, and taped the chux to all the walls with masking tape -so they don't move(the taping takes time). I just gather them up in one big ball and throw them out in a few days. There is nothing but clean plywood underneath, with a layer of diatomacious earth. I wish I could find one big sheet of it for the homer coop, but that would require too much time taping them together. Here is my baby doll coop floor lined in them. http://pets.webshots.com/photo/20603...70319248iEkpBT http://pets.webshots.com/photo/21909...70319248dsyIvK |

Treesa, the coop looks so clean and nice. I imagine it is really easy to clean with the chux on the floor. Great idea.
I can see why you call the coop "baby doll" because all I saw in those pictures were living baby dolls. The little black one is so cute. The closest bird we have that looks similar is our Kristina who is a dainty little white crested bird. I enjoyed seeing the chux but enjoyed the boys and girls best.

Thanks Maggie, I always appreciate a nice clean coop, because it doesn't last long
I'm glad you enjoyed my "baby dolls". The little black one is Arthur (little roller), and he is a little busy body, but oh SO cute. His wife, Ashley, was on a perch above him. The other bird was my Satinette Spike, and the two blue Satinette's are Simon and Serena. Reti nicknamed my smaller pigeons the "baby dolls." That was the best term to describe their smaller stature and their sweet endearing personalities. I bet Kristina is a living baby doll too! ![]() |

Treesa, I think I have just spent the last 20 or so minutes at your website admiring your babies (again)
I didn't remember Arthur and wanted to see more pictures of him. He really is gorgeous and his wife Ashley is beautiful. Have they had babies? I know they'd produce some beautiful ones. I also enjoyed looking at Tiny's visit. He blended right in with all of yours as if he had always been there. Your boys and girls are lovely.

I appreciate your thoughts and comments. Arthur and Ashley, had one baby (Maurice) that died as it turns out both Arthur and Ashley are inbred, which I didn't know about until later. They were given to me as a pair. He was the cutest little doll baby (missing one toe), and I had Archimedes and Ken rear him (my most experienced breeders), but he never thrived. |

That was a wonderful visit, and I miss Tiny very much. Hope we can come and see you all. Thomas is very large, and mated to Snow White. They look beautiful together. They are sitting on dummy eggs now, and when I approach him he wing slaps the heck out of me, he is very scared of me and very bossy of his mate. Gorgeous is still mated to Leonard, and happily. |
