After how many days....

Hi there.... just a quick question!
After how many days is it ok to keep a feral pigeon with my pet pigeons (after it doesnt show any sign of diseases that can pass on)? This pigeon was hit by a ceiling fan, and had one eye blinded.... n now its almost healed.... Is it ok to keep with my other pigeons ? It is missing a few toes on its right leg though, and the base of its toes are a little swollen (probably due to some infection when they got cut?)

Thanks,
Dhruv Majumdar

Fortfun,
I should caveate this as I'm a novice at this... but here's my 2 cents and over to the experts after that...

I'd say the feral should be on a round of antibiotics first, which you my already be up to and at least be wormed and treated for Canker after that before being put in with your pet pigeons (not sure if it should be Canker treatment, then wormed or the other way around). If possible, vaccinated for PMV and Pox too wouldn't be a bad idea I'd think too. Of course, like you say, you'd definitly want the feral to not be showing any outward signs of any illness. You could send some of the ferals dropings off to Foy's for analysis?... not sure if that's a good thought or not, I just see that its a service offered on their web-site, not sure what's all involved or what you get for it.

Anyway, I'll be interested to hear what the experts say.

Hi there,
Zig, I think it might be difficult for Drhuv to send a fecal sample to Foy's considering his location-LOL.

Anyway, Zig is right, if no obvious symptoms exist, and you could give him sartrix and appertex and even deworm him, I think 3 weeks should be alright-4 weeks to be on the safe side.
If you could have a fecal done, maybe at your vet's, that would be very good, do it before giving him any antibiotics.

Well... in theory, he could send it from New Delhi to Foy's, but not vary practical... doh!

Anyway, I suppose most any Vet could check a fecal sample for worms. They call it a flotation test, I think, and I also think it just involves some dye and a run of the mill microscope to look for worms... or it goes something like that.

Anyway, anyway, my "fox paw". I'm still not used to checking where folk are from when it comes to this new fangled i.n.t.e.r.n.e.t. thing... remember... I'm old enough to remember having lived life BEFORE the internet.
