hello all~~I live in upstate n.y. in the adirondack mts. I have a visiting (lost i assume) homing pigeon. It has been with me for almost three weeks now. The weather isn't getting any warmer; and i am concerned for this bird. It is in good health, with no injuries. I really would like to find it's owner! I live on a lake, so it has plenty of fresh water. I have been feeding it very well with blackoil sunflower seed, thistle seed, and cracked corn. It roost's every night in our shed, witch i leave open for it. I have conversed with three people at the international federation of pigeon society and have gotten no where. I was unable to view the band list on their web site.I hope someone out there can help me. All i need to now is who owns the pigeon and i will contact that person. The band on the right foot reads: 2004-4145-IF and under the IF is an S. The left foot has one yellow and one green band. This is all new to me, but i am very intrigued. I have learned alot about pigeons in the past week, and i like it alot! If anyone can help, please do so. Thank-you. ;) ;) ;)

Thank you for trying to locate the owner of this pigeon. I just checked the IF 2004 band list, and there is no club with a code of 4145. Can you please double check the band and make sure there aren't any additional letters or numbers on it?

Also try to be sure that what looks like IF with an S is not actually IPB which would be a Foy's band.

Here is a link to the AU site for information on how to read a band .. might be helpful to you: http://www.pigeon.org/lostbirdinfo.htm

TAWhatley,

Question for you... not sure if it fits here, but away I go...

Does one have to be a member of a club in order to band their pigeons? For example, lets say I aquire some birds here in the near future that are banded and then they have offspring... can I band their offspring? Where do I get bands? If I'm not confining the mated cock/hen in a breeding box and keeping the cocks/hens seperated when not breeding, obviously I couldn't be 100% sure who the dam and sire is, so then would that mean I cannot band the offspring? The reason I would think I'd like to band the offspring of any birds I have would be able to get them back, possibly, if I let them out to fly and they got hurt and taken in by someone... like hpbarmaid2001 has found a bird with a band and also like many otheres in many threads here have written about finding a wayward pigeon with band such and such numbers on it.

Personal Bands

Anyone can band their pigeons with private bands if desired. You don't have to be a member of a club to do this. I have gotten birds who look kind of like flying jewelry stores .. they have a club band, a private band, a special race band, and sometimes a colored plastic band or two. One has to wonder how they ever got airborne <LOL>!

Here's some links for where to order them:
