are they ready already?ok My Pair of birds are 14 weeks old,
they are mates and yesterday i heard them cooing to eachother in the special way and the female was putting her beak in the males beak, and then I saw them one on top of the other and sometimes end to end while cooing and bowing. Are they ready already??????? If so what should I do? other then put nesting stuff around for them to use. I also was wondering other then seperating them is there any way to postpone this a few months? |

14 weeks is a little young, but it is not impossible.
Sometimes you will see youngsters go through the ritual of mating, even nest building, but they won't lay yet. Other times, they will lay, but won't set on the eggs. And worse, sometimes, they set the eggs, which hatch, but they won't look after the babies. Kinda like teenagers having babies...not a good idea. Personally, we don't allow our youngsters to raise young. Often not until they are two year olds. You can get dummy eggs to put under them if they DO lay, or, you can keep VERY careful track of how long they've been on the second egg, and throw them away at about 10 days of sitting (from the 2nd egg). But, if you're not careful about the days, you could get an oops! And, if the youngsters aren't good parents, you could also end up hand raising a pair of squabs....not a simple task. The only sure method is to separate them, as you said. |

I only have two in a cage for now, and I let them loose in my apt every other day or so, We have 12 foot ceilings so they perch up onto of the window blinds and free fly every now and again.
I would hate to keep them apart. Is there anything else you can suggest? should i try the wait and see aproach? I'm writing down what I see so i can keep track. Maybe they aren't really ready cause yesterday they were all over eachother, and today not so much PLEASE HELP i dont know if i should keep them apart or give them nesting stuff or just relax and wait and see :confused |

If you wish to leave them togeather, then get them a nest box and nest materials for when they lay their first pair of eggs.
Then replace the eggs with "dummy" eggs and let them set full term (about 22 days), remove the eggs, and wait for them to lay additional eggs. This will give them the training they need for the time when they can do it all for real. Carl |
