Babies Walking Around And Easter EggsIf the baby Pigeons are kept in their little nests inside the cubby things, off the floor, at what age should I let them try walking around on the floor?
When I go up to them they make this little clicking sound and they seem to stand up while doing so. Is this normal? They don't do it all the time. Also if you want to see what I did with some of the eggs I pulled from them. Click on this link. http://community.webshots.com/user/pigeongirl look in the album "Easter" or the "My Pigeons" to see it. |

Yes, this is very normal. All of my baby pigeons have done that. They are defending themselves. Standing makes them look bigger and the clicking is all they can do seeing as they have no actual grunting voice yet. Sometimes mine would try to bite me, so then I'd act like they scared me off and they were quite proud of themselves.

I always take my babies out of their nest bowl at 18 days old. I put them in the floor during the day and then put them back in their nest box for the night. I find that once out of the nest bowl, they will start to pick at the feed when they see mom and dad doing it, rather than sit in the bowl and cry to be fed. Just be sure that if you put them in the floor no other birds pick on them. Sometimes other birds will seriously injure a baby.

Hi Firstimer,
Your pigeons are really cute, and I love those eggs! Are you using chicken wire for that aviary? You know that is not strong enough to keep predators out. You should replace it with hardware cloth. Do you close the aviary off from the coop at night? I would do so until the chicken wire is replaced. I usually let my youngsters have exploring time for an hour a day when they are 14 days old. I put them in their own private playpen, where the grown up pigeons aren't allowed. They get water, seed, and a little sun and shade. they end up playing in their water bowl! LOL! "Are you using chicken wire for that aviary?"
Yes. I am for now, because we have to be out of our house in 15 days. So for now, I am just closing off the aviary from the coop at night with the third window that I pop in and out. "I put them in their own private playpen, where the grown up pigeons aren't allowed. They get water, seed, and a little sun and shade." Funny you wrote that because I just did that for them and I came inside to read what I just did. LOL! Yeah, I put them in a enclosed cage thing with in the coop so they can see the others doing their thing and still be free from danger. I put all three babies together, is that ok? I just checked on them and all three are trying to fit into one nest. They are a blessing. But I am concerned for all of our features. As life will be changing, in one way or another.Drastically. But we will not separate. I am blessed with the most wonderful animals, now 10 Pigeons,3 cats and two dogs. They are literally my friends and my family. Thanks for sharing your wonderful pictures. |
