baby pigeon on its way to adult hood needs help from death

ok i live in the UK and we have recently had some bad weather. im 14 yrs old and have no idea what to do! i found this baby pigeon in our garden, it is on its way to adult hood but still learning to fly and eat and stuff. it is heavily injured. with very obvious cuts and is bleeding, it has also lost some feathers. i have no idea how long it had been out there. i tried feeding it some wet weetabix. but it keeps closing its eyes and collapsing every now and again. im not sure it can survive much longer, but i need some help and a lot of advice!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Merel .. welcome and thank you so much for helping this poor baby pigeon! We have several members in the U.K. who may be able to assist you first hand. They will be along shortly. Please tell us where you are located so they have that information already available.

For now, please keep the baby inside in a warm (very warm) and quiet place. If there is still bleeding, try to get it stopped by holding a clean cloth against the wound or by "packing" the wound with cornstarch or flour.

Hang in there!

Thanks for taking care of this poor pigeon.
Don't worry about feeding it for now. You might want to try and get it to drink some water, though.
Gently dip its peak into a small dish of water, taking care not to submerge the nostrils. Pigeons suck water up with their peaks, so you will be able to see it swallowing.
Please discribe the wounds and their locations to us.

Hello,

I am in Norwich. Are you anywhere near me?

The baby needs treatment for shock urgently.

Can you get it to a vet?

We have members in other parts of the country that can help.

In the meantime, put it in a box on top of a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and put it somewhere safe and dark.

Check your e-mail and telephone me if you think I can help.

Cynthia

Hi Merel,
Whereabouts in the UK are you? I'm in South Devon, there is another UK member in Norwich and one in Blackburn. If you let us know where you are in the country we might be able to find someone to care for it. Alternatively you could try ringing St Tiggywinkles for advice on either how to care for the bird or they might know your nearest rehabber.http://www.sttiggywinkles.org.uk/
Tel;01844 292 292.
Or try; http://www.veggies.org.uk/acd/europe...cue/rescue.htm
They have lists of some UK rehabbers.
The bird will be needing fluids but please don't try this yourself if you haven't done it before as it is easy to drown a bird, your vet will know how to give fluids to a bird and can clean the wounds, and check for other injuries which may need treating like a broken wing, it will also need anti-biotics.They usually treat wildlife free of charge, but may have to pay for any medication you take away with you.
Once the bird has had fluids we can then give you advice on feeding if it is still alive.
As Terry said, in the meantime keep the bird warm and quiet, away from people.Good luck.

Merel, I'm very sorry the little bird died. It sounds like it was very badly injured, and it's quite possible that the little one was beyond saving when you found it. Thank you for trying to help.

Hi Merel,

I am so sorry that the little one died. From what you said its chances of survival would have been extremely slim but it was kind of you to care for it in its last moments, it will have appreciated that.

Cynthia

i was happy to help and i am glad to have given the pigeon some warmth, relaxtion and dry. i guess i knew the chances were slim but there is no point in giving up hope. however i was watching it just before it died and its beak was opening and closing. no sound was coming out but im worried it may have been gasping for breath or something. does anyone know what it could have been?

It was probably trying to cry but was just too weak. I know because when my little baby was very weak he cried more and more quietly, until eventually there was no sound. Sorry about the baby, Merel. I know you did your best!
