Yes, indeed your baby is having problems.
You mentioned you changed the baby's 'paper'. If you are referring to newspaper, that may be your culprit as the baby has nothing to 'grasp' onto if there is only a newspaper lining & the baby's legs will slide out from under him, causing 'splayed legs'. There needs to be something under them they can 'grasp' onto such as a small piece of cloth. Please note: I'm not saying your baby has splayed legs, rather suggesting this could be a 'possibility'. Members more experienced in the baby department will be along shortly to assist you further. In the meantime, I would place something under the little one that he can grasp onto. Cindy

And it might be time to tape the legs to correct this situation.
To correct splay leg, you will need to secure the legs in their natural position. You can use vet tape (self-adhesive gauze). Place the legs under the bird in their natural position (about one inch apart), and run the tape around the legs. You might need to lay the baby on its back to do this. You can wrap tape around the section between the legs to keep the legs apart. Alternatively, you can use any kind of soft material (gauze, sponge, cotton) between the legs. Warning: Be very careful that you do not cut off circulation in the legs. You will want to check the bird regularly and change the tape when it gets soiled The bird will be very clumsy at first, but it will soon learn to stand with its legs in their correct position. The time needed for healing could be one to three weeks. If you do not see improvement, you should take the bird to a rehabilitator or avian vet. |

Here is another idea:
Since you only have 1, a regular nest bowl won't do.I have used round bowls to put youngsters in, to keep the legs from spreading. Find a bowl that is the size of your youngster, that is comfy, but won't allow the legs to slip out, on either side. Layer the bowl with lots of clean paper towels, for changing. As the baby grows, get a larger bowl. It works!! Treesa |
