baby w/canker, now throwing upWe had to go out of town for a few days and had the neighbor looking after my flock.
After being back for a day, I noticed one of the babies (35-40days old) not looking well. After checking it out, I found canker in its mouth. I gave it a canker pill and brought it in the house. After some water and a meal of soaked puppy chow, it perked up some. Then looked better (less flufffed up, more alert) in the morning. Yesterday, when I came home from work, it had vomited most of what my husband had fed it for lunch. I gave it another canker pill, which I found on the floor of the cage later, too. It's poops are dark green runny liquid. It drank (after dipping peak in water), but I was afraid to feed it. This morning the yellow stuff in its mouth was gone. I'm out of ideas. Desperatley looking for suggestions, here. Erna P.S. There rest of the crowd is under going canker treatment, too, but looking good so far. |

I can think of three possible reasons. The first is that the baby is dehydrated from the illness so if you can syringe Pedialyte down, it might help. The second is that sometimes birds throw up after medicating so it might help to dose when the crop is empty and then wait for a while before feeding. The third is that canker may be in the crop where nobody can see it so you might want to try feeding only half or less of a cropfull for a while.
There is a fourth possiblity. The bird may have developed a yeast infection from the treatment. A canker medication has an impact to the good gut bacteria and if the balance is thrown off, the ever present yeast cells gain a foothold. Rather than give more medication for only a potential yeast infection, how about using a probiotic instead to try to regain a balance in the system? If you don't know for sure that this is being caused by a yeast infection, I wouldn't medicate for it. |

This morning the yellow stuff in its mouth was gone.
Hello Erna, Has the baby vomited anymore since you noticed the 'yellow stuff' was gone from it's mouth? It's possible he was vomiting in an attempt to get the canker out of his mouth/throat area. This is a less technical suggestion, nevertheless a possibility. I would suggest offering a heat source (place him on a heating pad, low setting or under a low wattage lamp), to your little patient. This will aid in helping to stabilize his body temperature. Please keep us posted on how things are coming along. Cindy ![]()

I tried feeding it just a few pieces of puppy chow (3) for starters, after letting it have plenty of water and it's all over the bottom of the cage again.
Have not tried giving it any more canker pills as of yet. Poor thing is just sitting in the corner all puffed up. I have to run out and purchase another heating pad, since one of my daughters friends helped himself to mine. Will pick up some probiotics at GNC while out. |

Can I suggest not being in too much of a hurry to feed the bird. Fluids - and the right sort are much more important. If the major organs are dehydrated then the digestive system will not work properly - hence the vomiting. The bird needs to be fully rehydrated and the digestive system given a chance to recover before food is offered.
