Basic care for my little princess

Good afternoon every one,

I found a little baby female pigeon early
this week and brought her home to take care
of her. She must be between 25 to 30 days
old as she is not flying yet. However I
know that it is but a matter of days before she does so.

I have looked at the basic care information
from the Web site, however I still have some questions when it comes to feeding my new
little princess.

How much baby cereal should she be eating
every 2 to 3 hours?

When do I know it is time to switch to seeds and grit?

And what is the difference between grit
and gravel?

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer me today. I am looking forward to a
wonderful new experience with my little girl.

Regards,
Mary

Hello Mary ( I am Mary too lol)

Your princess should be old enough to eat seeds on her own..Try to get some seeds and put them on the floor and peck with your finger and if she doesn't peck then take some and put it in her beak and she will get the idea that it is food!
Keep alittle water dish around too and gently dip her beak in and she will suck the water up..
The grit is suppose to be bigger for pigeons so don't buy the gravel(I bought so much of that stuff and my pigeon won't eat it) If you find crushed oyster shells then that's good...

Keep us posted and if you have more questions just post

Mary

I have tried to give her some seeds but it looks too difficult for her to eat them. They are too hard. I was wondering if there
would be some thing else I could give her. Maybe seeds again but in a way that would be much softer for her?

Thank you again.

Mary

Try giving her some dry oatmeal flakes...Pigeons are ment to eat seed and as long as you have grit for her there will no problem..

You can soak some seeds in hot water for at least 5 hours and feed it to her or let her peck at them..

Hello and welcome!

We have a princess too--a Warrior Princess named Cosmo. So I sort of know how you feel...

At such time that "Princess" begins taking seed, offer, separately, a supply of grit. Pigeons require it for digestion of hard seeds, and they extract mineral compounds from it as well.

Best of luck to you both!

PIGEONS FOREVER!!!

Good morning every one,

My little princesse has been eating some
seeds for two days now. Yesterday being the
first day she was eating what I would
consider a good meal. Pearl Barley seems
to be her favourite since she is mostly
eating that one out of them all.

However, I still have some concerns.
Is she suppose to know how much grit to take
on her own? Do you just let her eat all she
wants or must I keep an eye on it?

Also, since last night, I have noticed
that her belly is making some sounds. Some
sort of crunching sound. Is that normal?

And lastly, I find that she is eating
better than when I first got her, however,
she does not eat to the point where her
craw fills up a lot.... It does but just a
little. She also goes from 9 pm to 7 am
without any food. Any thing to worry about?

Thank you so much for all your help. I
appreciate it so much.

Regards,
Mary

She is an individual--like all of us. She will subscribe to he own hard-wiring.

As fo grit, offer it separately and let her learn.

Keep fresh water available 24/7.

You are an excellent pigeon-mom!
