Big city PigeonsAnyone from a big city that can help me with some Pigeon info. Do Pigeons/doves enter balcony and terrace of anyone? Pigeons deserve safe treatment for those who do not want them in their balcony.

Hi and welcome!
Several of our members have pigeons that visit their balconies, and they welcome them. Unfortunately some people are offended by such visits, and some of the methods used to deter pigeons from visiting can be cruel or lethal or both. However, they need not be! I read this on the PICAS (Pigeon Control Advisory Service) site today: There is a range of new deterrents on the market that offer interesting alternatives to standard proofing products, such as 100-foot plastic strips imprinted with holograms of owls’ eyes Such a deterrent would frighten pigeons off, but hopefully would not do them any harm! Hi Eddie
I have an apartment in a block, and most have balconies. I like to see the pigeons, but others do not. Some have had green nets put up to cover in the balcony. The balcony next door to me has special tensioned steel wire about 6 inches above the railing of the balcony so that pigeons cannot land. Both of these work without causing any harm to the birds. Hi John,
Quick question you say they cover them with green nets ...... are these like fishing net type woven or very small aight such as net you use to put bird seed in at a wedding?? I would be concerned with both as the Pigeon could get tangled in them when they land. L&P [This message has been edited by LadyandPheniox (edited November 02, 2002).]

Hi L&P,
I guess the nearest I can describe is a fine green netting, small holes, much like garden netting for shading? Not very visible from a distance, and stretched from the roof to the floor of balconies completely encasing them. I haven't seen any casualties, and I think the birds simply ignore those premises and use the balconies which are open to them. They know the apartments very well - and where they are welcome Personally, I would not put anything up which could even remotely harm a bird of any kind.John
