Bird Lover

Here is a copy of the e-mail I received from Lisa, think you will enjoye it.

Hi,
My name is Lisa, and I just discovered your web site while looking for designs of lofts. I have 8 Pigeons in my house now, and I really need to build a loft for them - I know, I must be nuts. Pigeons in my house. At least they stick pretty much to one room where the floor is linoleum and easy to clean. I love the photos and story of Sara. I have had Cockatiels, an Amazon, Pionus, African Grays, Macaws, Budgies and Canaries and many other types of birds come my way doing pet bird rescue work over the years. I've had my own personal "flock" of Cockatiels for many years, and have bred and shown them, but six months ago I met someone who had pigeons. He adopted one of my male Tiels for his female, and mentioned he had a loft and kept pigeons. I asked if I could see it, and, there was a baby that looked nearly dead next to another one 3x it's size that was it's nest mate. He said it probably wouldn't make it, and that's all I needed to hear. The baby was ice cold so I stuck it down my shirt and drove home holding it to me, to warm it up (it was January). I fed it and put it in my bird brooder and kept an eye on it, feeding it often. It really looked as if it might die, but I was determined and just fell in love with the little bird with yellow fuzz and big beak that made it resemble Jimmy Durante. The pigeon man called me and apologized for giving me bird that would surely die, as he saw how upset I was by it's condition. To my delight, by that night, this bird was begging me for more food and it's eyes were open and alert! Anyway, to make a long story short, I love this bird so much! It's now somewhere around 6 months old, and even though I have 150 birds in my house that I care for, this pigeon has stolen my heart. I named it "Pidge" and now know that it is a male. He seems to have chosen me as a mate, because he attacks anyone that comes near me, and I mean he attacks them. The man I got him from came to see how he was doing, and Pidge ran up his arm and bit him on the lip drawing blood! He loves me to pet him and loves to snuggle under my chin, and he preens my hair as he sits on my shoulder. If I leave the room, he is the only bird that flies around looking for me! Crazy bird - he acts like a large Cockatiel. I have other Pigeons now as well, and some I hand fed and raised as they had been severely plucked and picked on, and although they are tame and will fly to me, none are quite as dedicated as Pidge. Well, I enjoyed your photos of Sara, so I thought I would share my little story with you. I know you can relate - they really do steal your heart! Take care fellow Pigeon lover.

I thought I was the only nut that had pigeons flying around loose inside. My first pigeon that I rescued last year used to cuddle up and sleep on my shoulder next to my left ear while I watched TV. I named him(?) Walter, Walter Pigeon. I watched a hawk get him when I took him out back to do some wing stretching, which I often did. At that time I swore I'd never own another bird. Now I have two in my office, my pet Clyde that I've had for one year since I rescued him, and a mate for him I just got awhile back I named Bonnie. So now I've got two pigeons flying around.
Yes, I'm new to the site, and so far I think it's great.
Russ.

Well, great story Carl! And.... welcome Russ! Pigeons are great aren't they??? I have 4 now, only had them for about 2 months, well, 1 a month and a half, 2 more about 3 or 4 weeks ago, and my newest a week ago today, and she's already flying with the others! So smart!
