Birds dead in two daysMy friend (who lives in California) just gave me a call to let me know that he is having one of his Brunners posted. A good friend of his just died and he inherited 200 Brunners that he brought into his lofts. Shortly after they arrived some of them died for no apparent reason. Unfortunately, he did not have the room to put the new birds into quarantine and has exposed all of his birds to this sickness as well.
The first sign of illness is the bird looks a little fluffed up and goes off feed. Two days later the bird is dead. He has lost quite a few birds and the symptoms are always the same. He medicated with Dax 4 in 1(a European medication made for pigeons) that is supposed to cure Canker, e-coli, coccidiosis and paratyphoid. He asked me for my opinion and I was at a loss for I have never seen an illness kill a healthy bird that fast! What do you think and have any of you dealt with an illness of this insidious nature. He is still kicking himself in the butt for exposing his birds to this disease but at least he is seeking qualified help! Mary Ladd |

Hi, Mary:
"Dax 4 In 1" sounds like the "Dacoxine" I just read about via Sirpigeon's tip. This was a logical first step, and the fact it had no effect is frightening! Has one of the original resident birds contracted the illness and died yet? This is important... --Ray |

Ray, None of his orginal birds have succumbed to this disease as of yet. We have corresponded and he did take a bird to the vet. The vet said he would have more information tomorrow so I will keep you all posted. This is scary!!! Mary Ladd |

Jeez...
Would be, could be, any combination of things. No vomiting or anything? Poops okay? There are too many questions to post here... At any rate, I can offer nothing further. I'm thinking toxins or parasites... ![]() Poor babies... ![]() --Ray |

Hi Ray,
The Vet hasn't found anything yet so he sent blood work to the lab and will know more in 3 or 4 days. I hope it isn't a killer virus ![]() Mary Ladd |

This sure sounds like PMV, with the time at which the birds pass it sure is indicative of it, some birds remain carriers and when this happen and that particular bird is introduced into a new loft, a devastating loss can occur, i sure hope this is not your case. I had this happen to a friend of mine, and when all was said and done ,he lugged buckets of dead birds out. It would help to order PMV and water and feed the birds if they arent eating and drinking. If nothing else the birds will be vaccinated for PMV as well.
