Bloody eggThis morning I went to let everyone out of the barn and one of my two year old hens was nesting under our little wooden bridge, so she didn't get put up for the night. She was a little confused but not bothered by it too much.
Much question though is, the egg vas very bloody. I have had this happen before but only with the first egg from a young hen but, since she is two in june and this was not her first egg I am a bit concernd about it. A small amount of blood I rule out but this one was covered. I pulled the egg and gave her a fake. I want to make sure everyone is nesting normaly before I choose who to allow to raise chicks this year since I only allow it once each year, one clutch each pair and only two or three pairs. AND she is the first chick of mine to hatch so I am worried about the poor little girl though she doesn't seem stressed or like she isn't feeling well. |

Hi Christina,
I have not run across this one myself, except under normal circumstances when Sonic laid her first egg. I would have her looked at by a rehabber or avian vet. I just had a hen that bled before she laid two perfect eggs, because of exterior trauma right next to the vent. I treated her for infection and trauma, and isolated her for several days so that I could keep a close eye on her. She is fine and luckily it was a minor injury, she must have hit herself on her bottom. Keep her close to you where you can watch her, and do check for trauma, but please take her to a vet. Treesa

Hello,
You will need a vet to tell you what caused this, but as a precaution she should have antibiotics as there is an internal injury of some sort. I would keep her warm and quiet in the meantime and give her a calcium supplement and spartrix, in case the bleed was caused by internal canker. Thank you!
I have been giving all hens when they start nesting activity a liquid calcium carbonate that I got from my vet. Once they show signs of nesting I give them two drops orally twice a day and then once the eggs are laid they get two drops orally once a day for a week. What is Spartrix? I don't remember hearing or reading about it. What does it do and how can I get it? I will look into getting her checked out. Thanks, |

Spartrix is used to medicate for canker and also as a preventative.
