Bravo Dano!I would just like to say that even though I'm mostly quiet on the board here, it hasn't gotten by me that Dano provides a cornucopia of information to the other pigeon people in the group! You are a walking, talking encyclopedia of information about pigeons and their needs! You always have an intelligent answer for someone. You must be a long time breeder, but in any case, hats off to you and your WEALTH of information and help you provide to the rest of us.
A big thanks from us all, Brad [This message has been edited by Pigeonpal2002 (edited June 04, 2004).] |

Thanks for your kind words. My knowledge is actually quite spotty without the help of reference material and this forum; and being a maverick with sharp elbows does not always work for me either - my birds made me do it lol.

I agree wholeheartedly!
I would also like to extend this appreciation to Teresa (Trees Grey), who is another particularly knowledgeable and helpful member, and to all the others (too many to even try to name individually!) who give so much and so generouusly of their time and knowledge to help pigeons in trouble. My two cents is there is quite a core of expertise here and they all have the real spirit for these birds and it is much appreciated. A special thanks to birdy and Treesa for generously sharing their knowledge with me.
Here's a story for you: I recently got a "splotchy" hen as Treesa calls them. Had to trap her in Peoples Park off Telegraph Ave near U.C. This park is noteworthy historically, as a focus for the of the anti Vietnam war protests - many demonstrations, love ins, tear gas etc. Now the place is a lawn and garden, home to to the homeless, and a place pigeons can get greens, grit, clean water, lots of handouts, and the leavings of the daily homeless buffet dinner. This hen had 5.3 toes left and three of them were severally string impacted. When you see a bird have to diliberately lift a crippled foot and place it carefully down every time - it just gets you desperate and more creative than normal. I did manage to gain her confidence and then scoop her in a little hand net after about two weeks. Thanks to Cynthia's Bach Rescue Cream she now has two healing toes on each foot and she walks with less pain every day. While she was in my quarantine cage, the cocks at my place all tried to get into that cage - she's a cute one. I let her fly out the window a few days ago - she went to the roof, took a look around and went straight to Peoples Park. Now when I look for her, I expected her to run like hell - as Fred said, when you have to handle them a lot they don't want to see any more of the monster, and I was working on those feet for awhile and subsequently giving her showers, spraying her for parasites, and pumping her with all kinds of nutrients and meds. But she did remember me and she didn't fly away in terror, though she has no intention off walsing up to me now, plus she is quick on her feet now. So how to keep feeding her the good stuff? hmmmm... well the local birds there are numerous and hungry and many of them know me so it's hard to feed one bird without a pile on. But we worked out a system, Whisper and I (she had the quietest wing beats of any bird in my room). I throw a little seed to the birds - very scattered. They all go for it, but Whisper hangs back. She watches. Walk away a bit, the birds are heads down in the seed, and reach down and discreetly place a big pile of seed near Whisper and walk away. She knows the score; she walks over and eats hugely before the mob discovers. Repeat process. So she remains a client and I see her everyday. |

Dano, that's a great story. Treesa has some beautiful "splotchy" birds.
She's a tremendous asset to the forum. Her knowledge is awesome and she gives great advice to any that care to ask. Treesa has a knack for putting some complex issues in understandable instructions. In the short time that I've been associated with the forum I have found all the regular posters to be a great source of knowledge. birdy |

Great story.
Pigeons are so smart. I am sure the little guy you rescued knows you did something good for him. Reti
