Cat caught another pigeon today

The same cat caught another pigeon today. They all flew up from the cat but one didn't make it to my roof of the house and flew into a bedroom window and fell down. Ofcourse by then the cat had run up to it and took it away and I ran outside trying to catch the cat, but he ran into the field next to our house with long grass and I lost him.

It's a shame as the bird died and it was also a very expensive one. Its mum was a full sister to 4 birds that won the cup of Vlaanderen (birds won a race from Barcelona to Holland) which is well over 1000 kilometers.

Such a shame, and a story I hate to hear. This seems to drive the point across further about cats needing to be kept indoors or on a leash. That thread has gone on for miles and the point will be argued by both sides, but when it comes down to it...Cats are winning the battle and arer wantonly destroying more life than most species other than humans.

JMHO,

Brad

So that makes four birds killed so far....

I Do feel sorry for you and especially for your birds, but what can anyone say? If things continue the way they are, your birds are apparently going to be killed one by one.

Maybe you should confine them to the loft....yea, yea, yea, I know the birds probably like to go out, but I think I would rather have live restricted birds than continue to keep leading them to the slaughter every day.

At the wildife centre on tuesday a lady brought in a baby robin. The robin died before she got it here and I just wanted to smack the #$%@ out of her and her husband. They said their cat caught other birds before and they still don't do anything. If I could do it without being charged with assualt and battery I would have done it. The only thing that did was I didn't want to push them into other birds. KEEP CATS INSIDE!

Cats are in the US originally to catch mice & rats. Most mice & rats are out at night when birds are out of reach. Ergo, cats should be in during the day & out at night. Why Pigeonworld doesn't set a live trap & catch the little turd, is beyond me???? For cryin' out loud! Call animal control and have them set a live trap!!! Then call them when you catch it & they will take it for adoption to somebody that might keep it indoors. You better hurry before you run out of birds!

Thunderbird,

Good suggestion, except there are many variables to this situation....If you read the entire pigeons and cats thread, plus pigeons and cats continued, then you will know what the story is.

Apparently Pigeonworldwide is a kid. He knows the neighbor who owns the cats that are killing his pigeons. He does not want to secure his yard because he lets his own cat out to wreak havoc, also his parents will not go for securing the yard in anyway.

I can see no solution to this besides keeping the birds confined to their lofts or maybe letting them fly hungry first thing in the morning for exercise and then putting their food in the loft and keeping the birds in until the next morning.

To keep letting the birds out with the cat situation is signing their death warrent.

I feel bad for Pigeonworldwide, but something has to change. And if no action is taken, I, for one, could do without the weekly death announcements.

The only other VIABLE working plan I can see is keeping a dog outdoors. A dog trained to aid pigeons. Kind of like a pigeon dog. This takes training however and it not necessarily the ideal conditions for a canine to be in....constantly outdoors guarding pigeons, although I know it works and is feasible. However I maintain, cats should be kept indoors or a leash. Responsible cat owners KNOW this and if they don't, they deserve to have their pets trapped humanely and put in the pound at least. We as pigeon people are ultimately responsible for our birds and what they do to cause conflict with our neighours and cats are no different. The difference is, killer VS Killee and the amount of destruction to other wildlife and personal pets, which pigeons fit neither category.

Again, JMYO

Hi Brad,

Incidentally, what does JMYO stand for? Just wondering.....

Don't even bother to waste your time and breath with "the cats should be kept leashed or indoors" speech. The people who let their cats roam have a million lame excuses and will totally ignore any information you have to offer. Just read the Pigeons and Cats threads and you will see what I mean.

In the meantime, pigeons and other innocent birds and small animals have to die, so everyone can keep their kitties happy. It is amazing that these people are fine with their cats hunting down and killing birds, etc. because they say it is their cats "natural behavior." What I would like to offer is this: If my huge dog ripped your cat apart because it is his "natural behavior" to do so, would that be okay? Why do I have to accept picking up bloody pieces of a bird from my feral flock, because you people will not control your cats? I know it sounds mean, (and I will probably be taken to task for saying this) but I would just like to know how YOU would feel finding the bloody torn remains of your cat....That would be a different story, wouldn't it?

I sincerely apologize for climbing back on my soapbox again, but this subject REALLY gets to me....I know I am wasting my time even commenting on this, because it will not change a thing....If I was smart, I would just keep my mouth shut and just accept that I am wasting my time and emotions on a losing battle..

The trouble is...I can't get the picture of blood, feathers and torn throat out of my mind.....all so kitty can accomodate her "natural" instincts.

Whole thing makes me sick.

I agree whole-haertedly with Lin and I enjoy reading what people have to say on their soapbox. Good points.

As thunderbird mentioned, I could get a trap placed, but the thing is, it is illegal to do that over here in the Netherlands. I'm going over to the owner today to see what we can do about it. As Lin said, I could let my birds out for a little fly and keep them hungy so I can call them in. This might seem a good idea, but I can't do that at the moment as I still have 7 babies in nests, and for them to grow properly, you need to give the pigeons a lot of food, and they have to leave some food over in the feeding bowl, as they have to choose what seed its best for the young. I'll think that I will keep my birds in for a while untill I come up with a permenent solution.

And the dog might think my cat is a threat too! Don't think my parents would allow me to have a dog either.

I didn't know you couldn't live-trap a cat anywhere!!! I guess that goes to show you what happens when liberals run things. You can't even protect your own property!! I think that you need to concede it's time to keep the birds inside.
