Clipping toe nailsJust a quick question:
How often do you clip your birds toe nails. I do it once a month. Is that okay or should I do it more often (depeneding on the bird)?? Thanks Hilary Dawn

Well, we don't (the rescue birds in Cynthia's aviary).
Do the nails appear to be abnormally long? Is the pigeon kept inside so that the nails do not get the chance to wear down? John |

I just clipped them today, so they're good for now. Hilary Dawn

I don't ever clip my pigeons nails unless they become a problem for them. My birds have one landing location that is covered with 3 tab roofing, sort of a heavy sand covering. This helps to keep their beaks and nails in good shape.

I generally don't clip the nails unless there is a problem. Many people give their birds a brick to stand on which helps keep the nails from getting too long.
I have one bird with an old injury to her toe where the nail doesn't point down so it doesn't get worn away. That one I clip every month or two. I also may file a bit of Walter's nail tips. He weighs 720 grams and his nails can really dig into my hand!
