Cruelty in New York CityIt is not the first time this happens... I have been walking, quite often, for a few years now, through the streets of a "rich" neighborhood of Manhattan, observing the pigeons and their life throughout it. I have been constantly seeing residents of this neighborhood walking their dogs all over the place, some of them (quite many) snobs whose biggest pleasure I noticed is to let their dogs'leash loose, so the animals can chase and charge after the pigeons. In two cases I saw the dogs hurting the pigeons, right under their masters' satisfied faces. Today, a young pigeon, who seemed to have landed on the sidewalk for the first time in his life, has just met such a dog and his master. The dog has been encouraged to chase him into the middle of the street, where a crazy motorcyclist went, at fool speed, right through the bird... I have no doubt that he could have avoided the young pigeon. The dog's owner applauded the scene and had the most satisfied expression on his face, while praizing his monster for his deed...
Well, it goes without saying how outraged and disgusted I am. I just wanted to share my feelings with you, dear friends and make you aware of things you might have to witness while on visit in New York City. There is a lot of cruelty going on here against our lovely pigeons and the only means that we have against it is the increasing number of pigeon friendly people in our area. Sincerely, Ely |

I'm sorry that you had to witness that Ely. I'd like to make that person pigeon for a day and hand him over to his kids.

If I lived there, I'd be tempted to carry a camera and note pad. Take a picture of the offender and write down the date and location. Turn it over to the SPCA, Animal Rights Coalition or PETA. Have a copy of it blown up and get them to put it on a bulletin board. These people deserve to be shamed into change. Obviously education didn't help teach them respect for living creatures.

Cosmo, my one-winged Warrior Princess, was "pinioned" by a mindless dog and its mindless owner.
Dogs, as sentient souls, are like their owners. Some sing and celebrate life, while others are solidly on the side of entropy. If anything, hearing this crap galvanizes my resolve. PIGEONS FOREVER!!! --Ray |

Aloft,
I also live in NYC. You don't have to tell me what goes on. I see the results of this all the time. When I actually witness these events, I try to put a stop to it. One of these days I am going to get myself killed.

I live in NJ and 10 min from NYC. I hate any cruelty to all animals and those terrible dog owners who encourage their pets like that need their butts kicked! Imagine how they would feel if their prized pooch got hurt or killed. Well, if I was there that person would be scared to lead a walk of terror in those streets again! I say open your mouth real loud and embarrass them. End it with a good "SHAME ON YOU!@" It seems to work for me.

I feed the pigeons downtown in the winter when there are less people hanging around leaving food for them. I have seen parents with their kids allowing them to run through the pigeons trying to eat or stay warm in the sun. I give them bloody hell for it too. I make sure I say what I have to say loud enough so everyone within a good half mile can hear me. I don't swear, but I do tell them that they should be ashamed of their behavior and how they are teaching their children cruelty. It's not the poor kids hanging about either, it's usually the rich snots.
