Question

Feed Pricing

What are you paying for feed? Where are you? How much protien? What size bag? Type of brand? type of mix?

I buy it in 50 Lb bags--and it is either 14% or 12% protein depending on what time of year I want to feed what, etc. anyway the bags are about $17.00- --the store I go to also has the pellets which is about the same price. This is an actual "pet food warehouse" not a feed store so this price may be more than a place where they buy it bulk. Unfortunately, there are no feed mills in the city here. I believe the brand is purina but don't quote me on that --

Feed

I have bought a safflower mix, 17%,50lbs $15.00ea. then I got a popcorn mix,11%, 50lbs $11.50. Rena and I were looking for feed store that sold 50lbs @$6.00 ea if you buy 300lbs. Anyone know who we are thinking about? At one time was able to 40 lbs of scratch for $3.50. It was 8%. So had to mix in sunflowers, safflower, millet, and catfood to bring the protien up

Hi Debbie,

I just bought a 50lb bag on the weekend. It was $13.98 + tax and it's just called "summer mix". The protein content isn't listed on the bag but it contains most of the usual grains and seeds except for corn. There is also no safflower in this mix either. It contains 3 types of peas, wheat, red and white milo, millet, barley and some other things. Then I add pellets, popcorn, lentils, safflower, sunflower, hemp, mung beans, pot barley and now peanut hearts

***sunflower, safflower and peanut hearts are mixed in, in a very small amount***

I spent $7.89 on a 10lb bag of Safflower, $9.29 on a 10lb. bag of peanut hearts, and $7.50 for 5lbs. of hemp.

Brad-
I use the summer mix too. Probably the same one you get. I used to pay $13.99 as well, but then I found the same mixture at the market (Stoufville) for $10 no tax. I get whole corn from a local farmer down the road that I mix in as well. I also mix in some black sunflower seeds. They seem to pick out the same seeds all the time and leave the ones they don't like. I just give the left overs to the chickens, they eat everything!

Hi Jimmy,

I wonder if Bragg's Feed supplies more local area stores than I thought then? I know they supply another feed store in Bowmanville as well. You get yours for a good price at the Stouffville market but then again, you have more birds to feed than me

My pigeons WILL NOT eat the large red and yellow corn that comes in some of the mixes, this is why I use popcorn. I buy the popcorn, mung beans, and shelled sunflower from the bulk barn and it's all pretty cheap.

My pigeons are picky too and I'm really trying hard to make them clean up everything now. I used to top up dishes all the time but I've stopped this mostly. I can't only feed them twice a day either because I'm a night worker and sleep during the day. Therefore, I can't be awake for their second feeding in the afternoon. I've found a few ways to trick them into thinking I've added more seeds though ...and as well, I will recycle more of the spilt seeds than I used to.

Hey Brad..
I know what you mean about tricking them! I have to do that too! I pretend to put more seed in, and then they come down to check it out and start to pick thru them all over again. On a side note, a pigeon guy told me a "secret" about pigeon feed. He asked me if I had laying hens (chickens) which I do, and asked if I use laying crumbs (for better egg production). He said that those crumbs/pellets have all the nutrition/vitamins/ minerals that pigeons need. He said to buy some corn to add in and that would be a complete diet. He said they would take a couple days to get used to it, but then they should gooble it down once they get hungry and try it. He has a few racing pigeon lofts and has that pigeon supply store it told you about. It would lead me to believe that he knows what he is talking about. I will post a list of ingredients, nutrtional values etc. and see what everyone here thinks....

I get the Higgins brand Pigeon Grain Supreme, no corn, for 14.69 for a 50 lb. bag from the local pigeon racing club, he buys it wholesale out of Miami. It has all the various grains, seeds, and legumes. I also purchase a bag with corn (same grains and seed, with corn) for 13.69. I buy two bags a month.

I personalize it and add Flax seeds and other grains to it.

Hi Jimmy,

I really like the pigeon pellets myself. I can't remember what brand mine are but I get them at Bragg's or Hendriks.

I've heard of breeders and fanciers that swear by them and feed them exclusively to their birds. They tend to make the droppings softer and a litte more liquidy and you don't really need to offer grit either if they are on a pure pellet diet.

For myself, I add about 30-35% pigeon pellets to the mix ratio, so quite a bit. My younger birds eat them pretty well but my older pair doesn't. I don't think I'm ready to switch over to a complete diet of pellets for the birds, but I am considering upping the ratio to maybe 50%

Around her most use edmonds best either racing mix or standard mix. 13 to 16 percent protien. It was 8.50 For a 50lb pound bag but as fuel cost have risen it has gone to 15 dollars a bag. Also some use blue bonnet A very clean feed. it was 12 50 a bag it went I believe to 16 and 17 dollares a bag. Now that is not so bad. As years back mostly purinia feed was the main feed. It ran 16 to 19 dollars years back. BUT it was hauled in from other states. While the feeds I mentioned are put to gethere in the state. A little better priced that way for state breeders any way.
