Found Bird who Wants to go home

I currently have a pigeon that was found a few weeks ago in Prarie Village, KS He was taken to a vet that held him /her for about 2 weeks (they thought he was a dove) then I adopted him since the owner never claimed it. He / She is pure white and has a green plastic band with number 44 on it. It seemed to be wounded for a while and was able to be picked up, it doesn't make much sound & now it seems to fly pretty well.

Hi Ruth and welcome to pigeons.com! Thank you for adopting this homeless bird! With only a numbered band there is little we can do to help you trace the owner. If there is another band with both letters and numbers, then we might be able to help find the owner.

If the owner cannot be located do you want to keep the bird? Pigeons make the most wonderful pet birds. One of our moderators here, Mary, has a beautiful white homer (Pearl) that is her pet and the companion of Dotty who is a rescued feral pigeon missing part of one leg. I'm sure Mary would be happy to share some pics of Dotty and Pearl if you like.

Please let us know what, if anything, we can do to help.

I belong to a forum of some 250 people who raise white homers. If you like, I could post this info (place and #) there, and see if anyone might own it?

Hello and thanks for adopting the poor lost bird!

As Terry said pigeons make wonderful pets, if it doesn't make much sound it could mean it's a female (My Pearl is a female too and she didn't make much sound at first)

Here are some pics.. http://community.webshots.com/user/marypigeon

Both my birds acted "Wild" at first and I thought it was ~*impossible*~ to ever every tame them but it wasn't and they are just so tame now that they even sit on my shoulder while I take a shower

That would be great if you could post the info on the other site I'd appreciate it. If I can't find the owner we'll keep it. We were planning on getting finches but now we just got little bigger bird. We will have to work on getting a bigger cage. I looked at all the pet stores for a flight cage (we were going to keep the finches in one) but I couldn't find one, The pet stores only have pretty tall & round cages, which I was told aren't really what is needed. Does anyone know of a website I could order one from. What size is recommended for pigeons.

Bird cages are really expensive and usually are not big enough for pigeons- you can easily build your own (When I got Dotty I simply set up a little table on a dest in the corner and put screens on 2 sides and it was perfect!)

As for building a nicer more temporary cage you can get advice from some of our members (Julie builds lovely cages for her birds, she just finished building a loft in her back yard too and it's beautiful!)

I will answer any questions that you have about building cages.

Here is my photo album.

In the "My Pigeons" album there any pictures of my indoor cage.

In the "Aviary" album there are pictures of the aviary I just built. You can build a smaller outdoor avairy.

Some build them out of scraps. Cynthia has a nice long aviary that is very practical for her pigeons. It looks like it would fit nicely along any yard.

Cool

Julie your aviary is beautiful. My husband said he would work on something outside for GINGER. Thanks for all the input.
