Found listless & inactive feral

Have another feral that is listless and was just staying put. Had no problem picking up food, but had no interest. Did go over for water. No obvious PMV symptoms ( neck twist or drunken behavior). Able to fly & walk straight.
On examanation: he is scary thin, weak, full of bugs (have sprayed) - no outward sign of injury. Vent is clear. His mouth showed no sign of infection (canker). Poop is runny white with soft green. His beak was dry & muddy-perhaps from eating slugs & such.
Have syringed water & spoon fed him wheat, barley & corn.
Was going to start with appertex for possible coccidiosis then panacur for worming.
Suggestions or thoughts?
How long (days) should I wait after giving him appertex should I give him panacur?
Thanks

Julianne

Hi Julianne,

I would put the little one on heat & place him in a quite/warm area away from family & foot traffic.
Generally our first thought is to get some liquids into our rescued pijjies. Actually, It's best not to give them anything by mouth until they have been warmed (heating pad or heat lamp), usually 20-30 minutes. This allows their body temperature to stabilize.

I think it's vital for everyone to have a batch of Cynthia's 'hydration solution' on hand. (water, sugar & salt, I believe). I thought I had the recipe saved but can't find it.
This is equivalent to Ringers Lactate, the IV solution administered during emergency situations. It contains electrolytes which gives the birds a 'boost' & is much more beneficial than plain water.

Please do keep us posted on the condition of your little patient.

That would be: International Rehydration Solution

Half a litre of water (preferably filtered)
• Half a teaspoonful salt
• Half a tablespoonful sugar or glucose

Stir until salt and sugar are dissolved and administer lukewarm.

I beleive the wormer should be adnministered after a gap of 2 days or so

I am so sorry Jules, but glad that you were able to make him comfortable for his last hours.

I'm so sorry Julianne.
The blessing is, he was safe & secure at the time of his passing, rather than out on the streets, alone.
Many thanks for allowing him to experience the true meaning of compassion.
