Thumbs up

Gonzo's Splay leg

When I found Gonzo he was a juvenile flying with the flock. He had one leg splaying out to one side and had to crawl on his wings to compete for food. He was less than half the size of a normal juvenile. When I caught him I found that his ability to compete for food was further hampered by an overgrown upper beak which made it difficult to pick up food.

I was under the impression that a splay leg could only be corrected during the first few weeks of a squabs life, but asked my friends at fprc http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fprc/ for advice on how to make Gonzo a bit comfortable. To my great surprise I was advised to try to correct the splay and given excellent instructions on how this could be done.

His treatment is finished now and his legs have remained in the correct position for 4 days...I am hoping that this will be a permanent cure!

I have uploaded photos of Gonzo before, during and after the treatment in my Splay Leg webshot album at http://community.webshots.com/user/cyro51

I am so grateful to everyone that helped me help Gonzo!!!!

Cynthia

Wow, Cynthia, what a great job. You can't even tell he ever had a splayed leg.
What's Gonzo's age?

I can only guess at his age, Reti. He must have been around 6 weeks when I found him because he had already integrated into the flock, so now he must be about 10 weeks old.

I have him and Muppet, the collared dove, indoors and they are inseparable.

As I think back on that day a month ago, I remember her trying to land on the SUV and when she fluttered and fluttered to the ground, I thought she hurt herself. But when you said that Gonzo's leg was sticking out to the side and he was using his wing to help him walk. That's is what Sweetie did when she went to go under the SUV. Her leg was sticking out on the side fully. It looked like Gonzo's leg but more pronounced. I saw on a website yesterday a chick with both legs fully Splayed. Sweetie's right leg looks like the baby chick's fully splayed legs. Sweetie always had full movement on that leg and I couldn't understand why her leg was not coopperating with her.

Thank you,

Cynthia,

Gonzo has made a remarkable recovery. Congratulations to both of you!!! The self-adhesive tape (like Vetrap?) is a great idea - soft and easy to work with.

I love the self adhesive bandages. This one was actually designed for use on human fingers. There is a thicker, stronger sort that is used for human limbs and I use that as a "foot glove" which is an effective but gentle splint for curled pigeon toes.

What a great idea, Cynthia! I'm sure the birds were more comfortable than with conventional adhesive.
