Got a Pair of Pigeons..Now What? :D

OK OK..Before you all think..Oh great another newbie who knows nothing about raising anything..Let me explain!! We have lot's of chickens..guineas..horses..cows..show rabbits and the list goes on and on But last night we were at an auction and I picked up a pair of pigeons..Something I have never had before!! They are beautifull..Not sure of the breed but they look like they are wearing turtlenecks!! Spent half the night trying to find sites on the net for care and to determine what breed they are. For now they are in a HUGE chicken cage in the house with some branches for perches and food and water on the floor and near the branches. Would appreciate any insight you could lend on what breed they may be and the best way to set them up. Am assuming they will be happier outside but like them where I can see them for now! TIA...Cindy Lynn

Hi Cindy

When you say they're, like, wearing a turtleneck, are they anything like either of these (not necessarily in their color)?

(that last one is right - there are 2 'jpg')

Close but no cigar! Actually I couldn't bring up the pictures you sent..But WOW I sure appreciate the quick reply. I did look up Komorner which is what I think you sent pictures of and that isn't it! They have feathers that also seem to swoop around from the back of their neck to the front going up and over the top of the back of their head..AAARGH What I wouldn't give for a digital camera right now! Thanx for trying to help John!

Hi, Cindy! Welcome aboard!

You wrote, in part: "...Oh great another newbie who knows nothing about raising anything..."

And though you qualify yourself as anything but, let me say that newbies are most welcome here! PigeonsRus!

I think I know what you mean by "turtlenecks"; these would be a fancy breed. Also check the Gallery at this site under Studio Images. Our host and sponsor, Carl, has provided excellent images of many fancy breeds.

From the home page, click on the "pigeon with crutches" to access information on nutritional and medical matters.

Again, welcome!

John_D: I'm getting a blank page from both the URL's you provided. Not sure what's up with that.

PIGEONS FOREVER!!!

You're right, Ray - but if I use those URLs in my mail client by setting up a dummy message, or just type 'em into IE, they come up fine. Weird!

Anyways, my money's on helemets, priests or monks

From your description, sounds like a Jacobin. See a picture in the Gallery, Studio Images, Jacobin.

Regards,
Carl
