MB,
Thanks for saving this bird. Literally, it is at the expense of your health. There are people who are allergic to the dander that birds give off and apparently, you are one of them. You can't keep the bird nor can you have any other bird at home that gives off dander. Cocketiels, for example, are very big dust producers. As this allergy progresses, asthmatic attacks can start up. Is this a bird that knows how to forage on its own or was this a baby you raised? If it's a pigeon that does not really know the outside world, letting it loose will be a death sentence. Do you know anyone who would be willing to adopt the bird? If it was an adult, you can let it go assuming the temperature is 40 degrees or higher. I hope you can update us on this situation.

Hi MB,
I'm so sorry you are allergic to this bird. I know how much effort and care you put into helping it. Please put another post in the new Adoption section about needing to find a home. Terry Whatley [This message has been edited by TAWhatley (edited March 05, 2003).] |

Hello Terry and Fred,
The pigeon is getting much better and it is now walking around putting some pressure on its foot with a slight limp. Just yesterday though, the pigeon has decided that we will not feed him anymore. He pecks and flogs me when I reach in his cage. He is also very obviously unhappy in the cage, flying about trying to get out. I have been letting him fly and walk around the house which he seems to enjoy and I have noticed that the stimulation makes him want to peck at his food. But once I put him back in the cage he doesn't seem that interested in the food and the problem is that we cannot hand feed him anymore. My question and concern putting my allergies aside for now are: Since he is miserable in his cage and not stimuated to eat unless he is flying about, is it better for me to just let him go? Temperatures are climbing to the 40's this weekend. Or, should I try to have him adopted? Hope to hear from you guys shortly! MB
