Help! My pigeon is acting extremely strange!

Hi guys, my pigy is doing much better (thanks to you guys) and its eating by himself. I have still not seen him drink water though! When I put its beak in the water he does not do anything!

BUT..today when I got home the pigeon was acting extremely strange. It was holding the head upside-down then he would twist the head around and around and fall off and loose balance and flap the wings trying to gain balance but fall on its side!!

HELP PLEASE!

Do you think he may be sick or is it something to do with dehydration?

It could be paratyphoid or PMV.

If it happens when he gets startled, like when you clap your hands, then it is most likely to be PMV. What are his droppings like?

I think that despite his youth a course of Baytril might be in order. That will treat paratyphoid if it is that and would treat any underlying infections if it is PMV.

Any second opinions?

Keep dipping his beak in water, make it accessible to him all day.

Just read your earlier post about the foggy eye and Fred's suggestion that this could be caused by paratyphoid. He really needs to start on the Baytril!

Hello Again,

Thank you for care and concern for this pigeon.

If you are truly worried about this pigeon you should put him on the Baytril, and take him to the avian vet as was suggested to you on Sept. 26th.

The advice that you have been given here is excellent, but letting time slip away especially with a young, more vulnerable pigeon, is compromising the health that you helped him gain. Put your mind at ease and follow the advice you asked for, thank you. Treesa

You can order baytril tablets here:
Baytril is:
Treatment of choice by veterinarians for many diseases in pigeons. Especially effective against paratyphoid and respiratory diseases disease is persistent, use longer. Tablet: 1/4 tablet for 7-10 days. You can order from http://www.foyspigeonsupplies.com/misc_meds/#Baytril

Thanks, I've been readig about paramyxovirus and as far as I read no medication is effective!
Maybe someone can give me some input. I read about paramyxovirus on the web at http://www.wingswest.net/pigeons/health/paramyxo.html

Thank you for any help.

While drugs such as Baytril have no effect on PMV itself, they do help stave off secondary bacterial infections that can easily take hold due to the weakened condition of the bird.

Birds with PMV need good supportive care and antibiotics in order to survive and recover to the greatest extent possible.

You don't know whether it is PMV or paratyphoid, so treating with baytril is the best course of action. But you are leaving treatment very late!

My pigeon Tristan exhibits this EXACT same behavior. I take it that it's the after effects of PMV still, and not a prior poorly healed injury as I previously thought--yes?

Yes, that is what Feefo the Beautiful did when she was startled. Unfortunately this is what eventually led to her death after 3 years because she drowned in the birdbath, no doubt as a result of having a fit
