House Pigeon?

I'm really falling in love with this orphaned pigeon I'm raising. Keeping her outside in the yard in some enclosure is out of the question. Too dangerous. Does anyone have a solitary house pigeon? Can this be done without being unfair to the pigeon? I just don't know what to do. I have a home for her with someone who raises pigeons. He can take her when he returns from vacation in July. What if I keep her? How big a cage do I need? How much free time should she have outside the cage? Is it OK if she never goes outside (too many hawks around here)? If anyone has any advice or experience, please, please, write to me at eekabird@ids.net I just don't know what to do and want what is best for this precious bird!

Yup!! I got my Tooty, i live in an apt. and i raised her since she was 5 days old, she is the daughter of the couple on my balcony and when her father had gone missing i had to raise her.
She is now 37 days old and she is a JOY!!

I don't have a cage for her inside,NOPE!
She walkes around the apartment and she can fly around and onto my head or shoulder.
At night she perches on the closet door and i put newspaper at the botton for her poops.
If she wants food in the mornings she flyes down onto the floor where all the seeds, and grit and water in little dishes.

I hear many people on this board have indoor pet pigeons and i don't see anything wrong with it.....I have many pigeons on my balcony that i feed and watch so Tooty copies what they do.
I wanted to let Tooty out but i was afraid becuase there are many crows and hawks in my area and i usually see them catch pigeons!
And if i did let her out she may catch diseases from hanging around with the feral flocks outside.

Thats all for now!

Good Luck with your pigeon

Mary and Tooty

There are many folks here who can attest to the joy of having a house pigeon. Both the birds and the humans are better for it!

I am sure some of these folks will be along to tell you about their feathered friends.

Me, I have a couple of dozen pet pigeons, but they live in cages and aviaries in my backyard. I do not feel I am doing any of them a disservice by not allowing them to fly free, and a good number of them are so disabled that this would be a death sentence.

I have two pigeons that live in my office. They have free range, and do just fine. Clyde, I recued a year ago when he fell out of a tree when he was just a pup (baby), and as time went by, I figured he needed a girl friend, so I got Bonnie from a guy that raises racing pigeons. Time will tell what happens next. They are house pets, and will stay that way.

Yep, I can give cage building advice. I'd build you one, but with shipping it'd be expensive.

Ray can give you good advice on turning a ferret's home into a pigeon's home.

House pigeon = happy pigeon? My first pet pigeon lived in the house for 15 years and I can tell you he was very happy. We shared meals, baths, bicycle rides, vacations...
The 4 doves I have now indoors begin to show the same interest in all human facilities...

You were not afraid to lose him on a bike ride? Did you let him outside any other times?

Julie, The pigeon I had was attacked by a cat. He couldn't fly very far, having an injured wing... So I was taking him everywhere with me!!!

House pigeons are happy if they are allowed to interact with the humans in their world. My house pigeon is a happy camper, and completely safe! She free flys in the house when I'm home.
