Hello,
How old was the bird? Did it show any signs on being ill when you sent it? Was it the birds first toss, 40 miles is quite a distence for the first toss. Ryan,

Is this the pigeon that came back already once from the same toss? Don't give up hope just yet, the bird may still come back. I do want to point out that you should have a team of at least 6 to 12 birds flying in a toss. They fly stronger in a group and warn each other of impending danger. Treesa

There are many factors that could play a role in birds not returning, enviromental were there clouds in the sky a few varied clouds is the best scenario he may have gotten attacked by a hawk sometimes they get lost I have had birds come home weeks after a race time of day they seem to like morning better than eve ( although I train my birds late in eve so they learn and are familiar with eve flying ) dont lose hope are you wanting to race or are these just pets if just pets I wouldnt train over 20 miles as there is no use in it during race season I dont train over 40 miles except early before races start I will take them 100 miles how long have you had them are they routed you might also look at post about losing birds farther down in this section

There are a hundred reasons why..........last year we won a race, took 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The three birds came home in the rain. I was shocked. They all went the next week and two of them never made it home again. Go figure. Every time you let them out of the loft, there's a GOOD chance that some will not come back, no matter how many times they've returned before. If anyone knew why this happens we would all do what we could to prevent it. Just hope your little one returns...........
