I adore city pigeonsWorking outdoors in Boston, Ive taken a great liking to the local pigeons, and have come to recognise individual pigeons and their personalities, and I think, they might recognise me as well. Others arent very pigeon freindly, but i welcome my fine feathered friends...
When i can i bring a large bag of birdfeed and spread it on the common so they have plenty to eat. Any other city folks fond of city pigeons? My father used to raise doves..But he hated city pigeons, which made no sense to me since thewy were from the same family tree...

Hello & Welcome to Pigeons.com
Pigeons are wonderful to explore. It is so nice of you to take a few extra minutes & feed the pijjies in your area. Yes, I'm quite sure they recongize you & most certainly welcome your visits. "A friendly face is rarely forgotten" Cindy

I LOVE city pigeons. As a ‘country girl’ who gets kind of claustrophobic when I'm at school in a big city (London), pigeons bring a little bit of non-human, non-concrete, non-bus-exhaust-ness to my life. I have them all mapped out around the city--Old One Leg at the Westminster Tube stop, 'Homer' by Tower Bridge, the little black who lays down at Covent Garden and makes everyone walk around him…!
I fed two pigeons off of my veranda last year (even my roommates reluctantly admitted by the end of the year that it was nice having them around), and one day while walking in a square a couple of blocks away, the male landed right at my feet, and looked up at me like, “Hi, fancy meeting you here. Just thought I’d drop down and say hello.” Maybe it was a coincidence, but I would like to think that they recognize us, for sure. All of my friends think I'm nuts for loving and noticing street pigeons in the city, but those friends that are around me enough often pick up the habit. As such an adaptable species, if you can learn to appreciate them, they are a potential bit of joy available to be observed no matter where you are in the world. They can be so silly and so dear, and always provide entertainment for me while waiting at a bus stop or just walking the streets. City people have so few interspecies interactions; as in we are so rarely around anything other than other humans, other humans, other humans. --Pigeons are, to me, the opportunity to interact with, and appreciate ‘wildlife’... when you're far far away from the 'wild.' It’s nice to hear from someone else with the same habit! ![]() |

Welcome Tinaic Wreck!
I visited Boston in 1974 and felt immediately at home there. A lovely place! Yes, pigeons do recognize the humans that feed them. I love it when a single pigeon lands in front of me and looks up as if to say "Hello, food-lady, anything for me today?". But sometimes 200 will spot me at the same timre and then it becomes slightly embarassing! ![]() Cynthia

Hi there Wreck, Cindy, PidgeP, Mike, Cynthia...
I just saw your post after I posted...guess there are a few of us like-minded people out there. PidgePidge, I totally agree with your assessment of the London situation. I've started watching out for birds whever I see them, notably for me, it's the little square next to Goodge St station on tottenham court rd as i work around there. my little nesting mum definitely recognises me as i change her water. if my wife steps out, she or the dad will flap their wings and coo a little probably 'cos they don't see her out there as much. looks like it doesn't matter, boston, london, casablanca, we all need some "interspecies" interaction!! |

Jedi, With regard to the pijjies reaction when your wife appears:
My backyard buddies display the same reaction. Some of them now come to the patio & eat out of my hand. However, if my husband is outside, they become a bit 'flighty' & ever so cautious. Perhaps the ones that feed them on a regular basis have been accepted into their flock, if you will. I like to think that anyway. Now! if I can just get the flying down, I'll be set. lol. Cindy
