Increased production with light

I have read that you can up the production of eggs by placing a light in the loft at night. I placed a drop light in mine tonight to give it a try. Is this true and is this the right kind of light to use? I have one hen who laid an egg on the wire floor yesterday. My initial response was to put the egg up in the nest box but I later moved it back to the floor but in a plastic bowl with hay. The pair is sitting the egg so far. Will the light I placed in the loft mess up the new pair? How does the light affect sitting birds and their taking turns on the nest?
Thanks,
Glen
