injured wild pigeon

This morning there was a wild pigeon on our doorstop. He can't fly, but is able to walk at a fairly fast clip. Appears his wing may be injured. He has no band, so I am assuming he is wild. But, to hang out on the doorstop? What do I do? Should I call a wildlife rehab place? Try to nurse him back to health?

I have him sheltered in a box outside with wild bird seed and water. If we go near him, he will walk away. Cute pigeon. Very beautiful. Seems healthy otherwise.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Michelle

Hi Michelle,

I would take him inside for the time being at least to keep him safe from predators. A grounded bird won't last long!

Hi

I would certainly take him inside. If his wing is injured, perhaps broken, your best bet would be to take him to a vet or rehab centre, so that he would have a chance of having his wing repaired and returned to the wild, if possible. Good luck

This is the time of year where we will see many pigeons showing up on our door steps. They are looking for help. I usually place the bird in a cage, cover it with a towel, place food and water inside, and watch to see if the pigeon will heal. Pigeons heal very fast.
If the pigeon gets better, you can relase it outside or decide to keep if as your pet.

Your other options would be to see a Vet. or get the pigeon to a rehab. center.

Good luck,
Carl
