laying and hatchingWhen pigeons lay eggs and then they hatch, after the squabs get a certain age do the parents lay more eggs even when their still taking care of the young. The reason I ask is because I have a pair of giant homers and they have 2 babies in their nest about 14 to 16 days in age and when I went to check on them there were 2 more eggs in their nest.

Yes, this is perfectly normal for them to lay a second clutch when there squabs are about 2 weeks old...The father will take care of the 2 squabs while the mother will take care of her new eggs.

If this behavior continues, the baby squabs could suffer from lack of attention. If this happens, remove the new eggs to give time for the squabs to grow.

Doesn't he need to put another nest in there? Or give them nesting material?
Do you want more pigeons? You can replace those new eggs with wooden eggs. Julie [This message has been edited by turkey (edited June 12, 2002).] |
