Lost Pigeon update from Florida-Goodmorning!
I wanted to update and have just a few more questions. I bought some small bird universal diet food (for Parakeets, Canaries, Finches, small birds) in the pet section not from the garden center. I hope that this is alright to give. Wal Mart didn't have or I couldn't find wild bird seed. I also found some plain unsalted shelled sunflower seeds. When I gave the bird the food it immediately started eating it like it was starving. Now I don't know how pigeons normally eat so to me it looked very hungry. It didn't really slow down for a good 5 minutes. Am I supposed to let it eat as much as it wants? or should I only give it a certain amount of food? It also drank the water this morning. It had several BM's overnight too, so maybe it has had some food recently???? It is very watery greenish dark with a little bit of white in it. (sorry for the details but I hope it is not sick or something) I am going to call the contact number after I am done playing school bus for the kids. Thanks for any response. Sandy, Ocoee Florida |

Lack of food is most likely the cause for the green droppings. I've seen it MANY times with my birds. It's very doubtful that the bird has any serious sickness since it was lost on a race. It's obvious that he most likely wasn't around other birds since he was all alone and hasn't had any food. Just let him eat and rest and I expect he'll be fine. When you contact the club, let us know if they don't respond or have a negative response. I don't expect that, but it does happen sometimes. Oh by the way, pigeon droppings is a BIG topic around here. You can't disgust us........

Well, my husband just volunteered us to go over to a friends house and work on his loft, so it seems I won't be around for a big part of the day. Hope you have some luck with the owner. There are other members here who can help if you run into a problem or need further help.

I did talk to the Club Sec. Tom Gilbertson. He was very pleasant. When I told him the band info, immediately, he said you are not gonna believe this but that used to be my bird, he gave it to a friend recently to race. He said that it has always flown well for him and that maybe it was being hunted by a hawk or something and took shelter. (I know we have owls very close to us in our neighborhood.) He told me to make sure it had plenty of water and that it likes to eat popcorn. He also explained that the dark red band is like a computer chip that tells when the bird checks in and out. That is very cool He told me that it should be able to fly home ok but he is going to call the owner to see how long it has been gone and get back with me on what to do. Thanks for all your support, helping and educating me. My kids (3 of them) are learning from this experience too. I will let you know how everything works out. Sandy Ocoee Florida |

That's great news. I just looked at a map, and "as the crow flies" the bird is about 60 miles, give or take from home. Once he's got some food in him, he should be able to fly that in an hour or hour and a half. It's really nothing for a strong bird to fly. Of course the owner will know better because he knows how long the bird has been gone. Sounds like you've got it under control. If your kids are interested in learning more about racing pigeons, here are some web sites they can visit, but of course if you google "racing pigeons", you'll come up with tons of info.

Yes, I did talk to the owner. He was relieved that his bird was safe. It is a male pigeon. He told me that it has been gone for 2 days and was due back yesterday around noon. He said something must have went wrong bc this bird always comes home and is one of his favs. He kept asking me if it looked ok and did I think it hit a wire?? or was it seeking shelter from a hawk? I told him the bird looks ok and that it came into my garage around 7:30pm so he kept trying to figure out what might have happened since this is the first time that this pigeon has done this. I don't fully understand pigeon races but he told me that it must have flown about 200 miles yesterday and that he lives 76 miles from me. He was very concerned and told me that this pigeon should have come home bc he (the pigeon) has a hen sitting on 3 eggs Also that they usually don't stop that close to home. You know I don't understand all the pigeon lingo but try to follow along. He asked me if I would house it tonight bc he doesn't want to risk letting it fly home. He wants to look him over to make sure he is not injured and the soonest he could come is tomorrow morning at 8am. I asked him if the pigeon has a name (dumb question, but I have been talking to it and call it bird, I would rather use his name) well he chuckled and said no he doesn't have a name bc he has so many of them. He told me that he is bringing me some books on pigeons, He also wants me to write down this website for him. He is thankful that the members here were so nice to help me help his pigeon. Today the pigeon was alert and very active. A big change from what he was last night. He is very messy! and my kids have enjoyed watching him. More tomorrow.... Sandy |

I am absolutely thrilled!! I'm sure that the owner will explain things in more detail to you when he comes to pick up the bird. It's just wonderful that he's coming to get it. Anyway......please do give him our web site address. And you tell him that "pigeons" is what we do here. We were VERY glad to help out. Please keep us updated.
![]() PS; Don't know if you've been to my web site? If you have a chance, take a look. There's lots of pictures of baby pigeons and all of our birds and loft.
