Luke's questionHi Luke,
Regarding your question about the compatibility of a hawk and a pigeon being raised together from hatchlings-- I discussed this with a friend who is expert in raising raptors (from eggs), as well as pigeons and other wild birds. We both thought it a very interesting question. (Don't worry, she loves pigeons too.) She believes it is possible, depending on certain factors: the type of hawk, the disposition of the particular hawk, the size of the hawk, the conditions under which they are raised, and the age of both at introduction to each other. There are some hawks that are too aggressive and nervous by nature (Swainson's, Cooper's for examples) that would make compatibility impossible. The mildest natured hawk is probably the red tailed hawk (though it depends on the individual bird). This type of hawk might have the highest probability of compatibility. A hawk that is imprinted on people doesn't know what a live food source is. So if it were raised and hand fed from hatching, it would probably not recognize the live pigeon as a food source. There is still the chance of accidental harm to the pigeon, simply because of the hawk's size and strength and beak, even as a baby. On the other hand, a baby kestrel would likely be very intimidated by a rambunctious, bigger baby pigeon. When the hawk gets bigger, and if it got hungry, there's always the chance it might go for the pigeon, injure it, and discover that the flesh was something to eat. It's all theoretical as I don't believe anyone has done this. Plus it is illegal. Both birds, as adults, would be dependent on human care for their lifetimes. This was an excellent, interesting question. I always enjoy reading what you have to say. Best, Marian |

Hey, guys!
I missed this somehow. The thought would have never occurred to me--a pigeon and a hawk, hanging together. I suppose, like Marian says, a lot would depend on the "individuals" involved. If hawks are anything like pigeons, there may be a few that would be easy going, if the food thing wasn't an issue, and they were introduced as siblings. There have, other than in myth, been instances where wild wolves have been known to raise a human child. This was presented to me many, many years ago, while attending college. The professor insisted that the story was authentic. The account was certainly detailed. Given that, who knows what's possible? --Ray |
